My Take on the Roster Split |
There has been recent talk of splitting
the current WWF roster into two separate rosters. Vince McMahon has delayed it a
few times already and the question has been raised of whether he should or
should not make the roster split. Will the split help the world of wrestling or
will it hurt it?
My take is that it can only help the situation. Let me explain what I mean. If
Vince splits the WWF roster and possibly creates a separate show for the second
group, we could at least have a little bit of variety. Not only could he use the
wrestlers that split off from the current WWF roster, but he could also use the
current wrestlers in Ohio Valley Wrestling and other developmental federations.
OVW has many wrestlers that are very good and could make a tremendous impact on
the wrestling world.
Even though the same company would own both groups, it at least gives fans
something to compare. We can have interesting debates on which group is better
and possibly arrange fantasy matches between each group. It would be as if we
had another WCW all over again, except better. Keep them separate for at least a
year and let fans form their opinion on which group is better.
Now, let me present this question. Which wrestlers do you split off from the
current WWF roster? Do you keep all the main event guys in the WWF and try to
form new main event wrestlers in the new group, or do you bring over some of the
main event guys to help give the new group a bigger push? I believe there are
two sides to this. If you do not bring any main event wrestlers over to the new
group, you can create new stars and give guys such as Kanyon, Edge, Christian,
RVD, and Rhyno chances to prove their abilities. On the other hand, if you bring
current main event wrestlers such as Angle, Kane, Stone Cold, or Booker T to the
new group, you give that group a better chance of gaining popularity very
quickly.
Now, this is assuming that the roster split will even take place. It’s
possible that we will not even see it, but the latest news is that it could
happen sometime after Wrestlemania. The nWo is poised to make a big return to
the WWF very soon. That should really shake things up a bit and give the fans
some very interesting storylines. I can’t wait to see how McMahon will add his
own little twist on the nWo group. Some wrestling fans are against the return of
Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and Hulk Hogan. Others, like myself, are for it
completely. I think they will make a great impact and really add some spice to
the current storylines. I like the idea of mixing old stars with some of the
new, younger talent. We can see Hogan square off against The Rock, Nash face off
against HHH, and Hall go up against Angle. Now that the WWF has brought in Curt
Hennig, Goldust, Scott Hall, Kevin Nash, and Hulk Hogan, it will be a very
interesting blend of the old and the new. I can’t wait to see how all of this
develops. It will also be interesting to see who will become part of the newly
reformed nWo.
One last little point that I would like to bring up is the situation with the
current WWF title. Are we going to see the current champ walk around with two
belts from now on, or is the WWF going to scrap the old WCW belt and just go
with the current WWF title? If the roster split does take place, they can use
the old WCW title as the world title for the new group. If they don't go that
route, I would like to see them make a new belt. Since the two belts have been
unified, maybe they could come up with a design that blends the look of both
belts into one. That’s just a little thought that is running around in my
cranium today that I thought I would share with all the fans. I am curious to
know what the fans think.
In next week’s column, I will be addressing the Intercontinental title race.
The IC belt does not seem as valuable as it once did. If you think about, the IC
belt sort of acts as the world title to the mid-card wrestlers. It’s about
time that the belt regains its importance and I know just the wrestlers that can
make that happen.
