The Royal Letdown |
Last night’s Royal Rumble finish was a
big disappointment to me. Again, let me stress the word “finish”. I thought
the PPV as a whole was great. Having Triple H win the Rumble was exactly what I
said should not happen. It was far too predictable and fans could see it coming
from miles away. Did Triple H deserve to win the Rumble? Yes. But, I just think
they should have given the win to someone other than him due to its
predictability.
I was very happy to see Tazz and Spike keep the tag titles. I thought for sure
the Dudley’s would defeat them and we would see yet another long boring riegn
for the duo from Dudleyville. Don’t get me wrong, I like D-von and Bubba Ray,
but I’m just tired of seeing them as the tag champs. I would not mind seeing
Tazz and Spike keep the belts for at least a few more weeks and then maybe drop
them to the up and coming tag team of “Chuck and Billy”.
I was very pleased that Regal beat Edge. Regal is a great heel who has the
ability to make you hate his guts. I like that about his character. He has
worked very hard in this business and I feel as though he deserves to wear the
belt. He brings a different style to the belt and it will be nice to see how his
reign as the IC champ turns out.
I was really surprised that Trish kept the Women’s title. I thought for sure
the newcomer, Jazz, would beat her. I’m happy to see that Trish held onto the
belt and continues to be rewarded for her hard work in the ring. She has been
very impressive with her progress in the ring and she deserves the belt more
than anyone right now.
It was nice to see “The Nature Boy” beat Vince’s ass, but I was a little
bothered that he had to punk out to McMahon so much during their match. We all
know that Flair could beat Vince’s tail from start to finish, but of course,
Vince has to look good at some point. Who can blame him? The man does own the
company. But still, this is Ric Flair we are talking about. Flair is one of, if
not the, greatest wrestler of all time. He should not have to punk out to anyone
at this stage of his career, especially Vince. But, at least he did have his
hand raised at the end of the match. You could tell that Flair was really
enjoying himself last night. It was great to see him in the ring.
Thank goodness Jericho beat the Rock again last night. Now, I don’t want to be
taken the wrong way here, so let me explain. I am a fan of The Rock. I’m not
the biggest fan of Jericho, even though I like him far better as a heel. I just
do not want to see “The Great One” in the main event at Wrestlemania again.
He has been there a good bit so far and he will have many more chances to be
there in the future. I think this year’s Wrestlemania should feature wrestlers
that have not been to the main event. Let guys like Angle, Jericho, and Triple H
demonstrate what kind of show they can put on in the main event at Wrestlemania.
Let the fans see one hell of a Triple Threat match that will go down in history
as one of the greatest Wrestlemania matches ever seen.
Now, let me move on to the Rumble itself. It was good to see Golddust, Val Venis,
The Godfather, and Curt Henning back in the ring. I really like the Golddust
character. He brings a lot of mystery and suspense to the WWF with his
character. I can’t say I’m a big fan of the wrestler who plays Golddust,
Dustin Runnels, because he is not the greatest wrestler in the world. By that, I
mean that he does not have a lot of moves like other wrestlers. He is very basic
in the ring and if it were not for his weird appearance, you could get very
bored with his matches. I was extremely impressed with Curt Henning. He was
delivering some great moves during the Rumble. If I didn’t know any better, I
would have thought he was an up and coming rookie in the world of professional
wrestling. I’m anxious to see how his contract situation with the WWF
develops.
There were several things that I was rather disappointed with. First off, what
is up with having Maven eliminate Taker? I’m not a huge fan of The Undertaker,
but I do respect everything he has done while in the business. Having him get
eliminated by Maven was just messed up. The writers did him completely wrong.
Especially the way they teased all the Taker fans out there by involving him
with Triple H and Austin before the Rumble and giving fans the impression that
he may go all the way this year. I just felt like there was a better way of
getting Maven “over” than to have him eliminate a man that has had a
tremendous career in the WWF. Needless to say, I was extremely disappointed with
Kane being eliminated so early after his entrance. This man completely dominated
the Rumble last year, but still came up short of winning. This year, they have
him eliminated very quickly, which does not make any sense. Think about it, he
was very dominated last year and he as improved his wrestling skills greatly
over the past year. So, wouldn’t it make sense to have him be just as dominant
if not more dominant this year? That’s just my opinion. Lastly, as I mentioned
earlier, I was disappointed to see Triple H win because of its predictability.
If anything, it would have made since to let Angle win the Rumble. Everything he
has competed after for the first time, he has accomplished. For example, the
gold metals in the Olympics and the WWF titles he has won. Having him win his
first Royal Rumble in the same town he won his Olympic medals would have made
for a far better storyline.
Even though Triple H won the Rumble, it can still set up a tremendous main event
for Wrestlemania that will hopefully include a 3-way match between Jericho,
Triple H, and Angle, or a main event of Jericho vs. Triple H. Just leave out
Stone Cold Steve Austin and The Rock. It is time for other lights to shine in
the main event at Wrestlemania.
