Stone Cold Tragedy

If you have been a frequent reader of my column, you would know that I am not the biggest Steve Austin fan in the world. I am not entertained by his predictability in and out of the ring and I have stated many times how I could care less whether he made his come back to wrestling or not.

His most recent comeback at No Way Out and Wrestlemania were sub par performances to say the least. However, I feel that he has caught a tough break with his possible career ending neck problems. No matter how much I dislike the Stone Cold character, I do not wish injury and early dismissal from a wrestling career on anyone. (Note: I stated I dislike the Stone Cold character, not Steve Williams the person).

In fact, I truly feel sorry for Steve because he may no longer be able to do what he loves to do in the ring. Some of you may say that I should not feel sorry for a man who brought all of this on himself. Yes, he did put his body at risk by choosing pro wrestling as a career and he did continue to wrestle with a bum neck even after doctors asked him not to.

But when you think about it, what dedicated wrestler wouldn’t do what Stone Cold has done? When wrestling is in your blood, it is there to stay no matter what. Look at me for example. Grant it, I’m not performing in the ring and putting my body on the line, but I’m dedicated to the business in another fashion. I can’t help but write about a form of entertainment that has been in my blood for 17 years and will always be a part of me until I die.

I am very dedicated to professional wrestling. I will stick up for it when people try to put it down and I will always protect it as much as I possibly can. Steve Williams has shown the same kind of dedication for most of his career.

The point I want to make is that I respect Stone Cold’s dedication to the business. I was very hard on him when he left wrestling for personal reasons instead of thinking about his fans, the business, and the other guys in the locker room. My opinion on that has not changed and will never change. I feel he could have handled things a bit differently. Whatever my opinion of Stone Cold may be does not take away the fact that I do respect the man very much. You have to respect someone who risks paralysis every time he steps into the squared circle.

Will I miss Stone Cold Steve Austin when he is gone? I will not lose any sleep over it. What I will miss is a dedicated man named Steve Williams with an electrifying and memorable ring entrance who has to possibly give up a life in the ring that he has known for many years because of physical limitations.

· John Cena is one of the most talented young performers in the business today. Is he in the correct gimmick? I’m not so sure. There are times when I find his character entertaining and there are other times I want to throw up when I have to listen to him bust out on stupid rhymes and riddles. I think there could be a more productive gimmick for Cena than his current one. Keep him as a heel and try to come up with something a little more original for his gimmick.
· Sable’s return to the WWE certainly shocked a number of wrestling fans. It shocked the heck out of me. However, it shocked me in a different way. I remember Sable during her days in the mid to late 90’s. She was the hottest diva on television and no one even came close. Now that she is back, she doesn’t seem as hot to me anymore when you look at women such as Trish and Torrie. Don’t get me wrong, I wouldn’t kick Sable out of the bed, I was just amazed at how she didn’t seem as “gorgeous” as she did before. No disrespect on you Sable, you are still hot, but you have a lot more competition now then before.
· You will find mixed reactions when it comes to Chris Jericho. Some fans can’t stand him and feel he is horrible in the ring. Other fans think he is one of the greatest of all time and under pushed. After thinking about this topic, I would have to agree with the fans that believe he is under pushed. Jericho proved himself with his performance at Wrestlemania and I feel he should have left there the winner of his match with HBK. It is time for Jericho to get another title run and show the world who is really the King.
