Time to Swing at a New Year

Happy New Year Chairshot fans! I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday season and I hope you are ready for a new year in sports entertainment. It’s been a few weeks since I have written a new column. I apologize for my laziness, but the holiday season has kept me pretty busy. I’m not going to write about my stupid little predictions for the year 2002 or my “awards” for the year 2001. We have enough people doing that these days. What I am going to do is shine my chair up nice and clean for the year 2002 and begin to take a few swings at some things this week and perhaps I will draw a little blood.

Everyone is anticipating the return of HHH. I have to admit that I look forward to it as well. But, I really hope that the WWF does not decide to throw him into the WWF title scene right out of the gate. I’m not saying they should ‘demote’ him to the Intercontinental title race, but they should at least either let him feud with another superstar and then earn a title shot, or they should enter him into the Royal Rumble, let him win that, and then give him a title shot. Throwing him into a match with Chris Jericho and then letting him win would be a bad move. It would totally negate everything they have done with Jericho to get him at the main event status. It would make Jericho look weak. It would also be a bad idea to throw him into a match with Jericho and them have him lose. That would not go over well with the fans and it would not be fair to Triple H giving him such a horrible return from a very serious injury. So, just keep Triple H out of the ring with Jericho to start out with. It would be pretty obvious that if Triple H is entered into the Royal Rumble, that he would come out the winner. But, it’s all about how the WWF works that angle.

Fans, I have to admit that I’m impressed by Jericho so far. I think he has done real well as the ‘undisputed’ champion. He’s starting to really develop his heel character very well and draw a great deal of heat from the fans. The WWF gave him the ball and he seems to be running pretty nicely with it. I’m anxious to see how well his character develops in the months to come.

A few columns back, I concentrated on the wrestlers I believed deserved to be in the WWF title race. That list of wrestlers included Triple H, Stone Cold, The Rock, Jericho, RVD, Kurt Angle, and Chris Benoit. One more name that should be added to this list is of course Booker T. I have said from the very beginning that Booker T could be a tremendous superstar in the WWF if they use him correctly. So far, the WWF has done everything correctly with Booker. They realized that he is much better as a heel (bad guy) rather than a face (good guy). Those scenes with Booker and Stone Cold going at it in the grocery story and then Stone Cold tracking Booker down in the church were classic!! Very funny and very entertaining. I feel like the WWF needs to do more scenes like those in the future. I will be focusing on the Intercontinental title race soon and giving my opinion on which wrestlers should be involved with that title in order to bring its level of importance back up where it should be.

What are some changes that you would like to see in wrestling in the coming year?? I know that I would love to see some new tag teams in the WWF. We have seen the emergence of Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo as a tag team. If given the right story angle and character design, they could be a big tag team in the future. I would also like to see the WWF go back to its old style of “Hardcore” matches. Lets see guys fighting in the streets, outside the arena, etc. Those made for some great hardcore matches and I believe they should go back to that in the coming year. A lot of you may disagree with what I’m about to say and I have no problem with that. But, I believe the WWF should continue to push its women wrestlers the way they are doing presently. I focused on that topic in a past column and I believe they have a great deal to offer the fans. Since the release of that column, the women’s title has been returned and the WWF has really focused on making the women’s division very entertaining. They have started putting that division on the forefront of wrestling.

So again, I ask you the fans, what would you like to see happen in the upcoming year? Please email me and let me know your opinions. My email address is Chairshots2head@yahoo.com. I would like to remind all the readers that this column is for you guys. I write this column each and every week so that you may look forward to reading it and so that it will make you think about the world of wrestling in detail just a little bit more. With that being said, I ask that all of you feel free to email me at anytime. I love to hear from you and hear your ideas and thoughts about this great and exciting form of entertainment we call professional wrestling.
