Bestselling Novel, Behold, This Dreamer Goes to Trade Paper in July

Melinda Haynes, author of Mother of Pearl, Oprah Book Club selection for June 1999, called Behold, This Dreamer "An incredible debut novel." Incredible, too, is that Charlotte Miller's first novel Behold, This Dreamer became a regional success story, selling out in hard-cover in just six months. "First-time novelists just aren't supposed to be able to do things like this," says author Robert Inman. Miller has toured the Southeast since the release of her book in November 2000, including signings in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, North Carolina, South Carolina, Florida, Mississippi, and Louisiana. She also appeared at last year's Southern Festival of Books in Nashville.

Janson Sanders, part Cherokee, part poor-but-proud white, is a man intent on revenging his father's death and taking back the land stolen from him by a wealthy planter. In the process, he meets and falls in love with the daughter of another rich landowner who happens to operate an illegal bootlegging industry. Set against the backdrop of rural life in the South during the twenties, Behold, This Dreamer is a story of hope and heartbreak, in which Janson Sanders is pulled one way by his love of the land and another way by his love of a woman.

Behold, This Dreamer is the first of a trilogy following the life of Janson Sanders. Miller's second novel, Through a Glass, Darkly (ISBN: 1-58838-054-8; $27.95 Cloth), will be released in September by NewSouth Books. Several booksellers have already asked her to return to their stores upon the release of the sequel.
