Complainants are, viz: James Holmes and Jane, his wife; Edward Braden, father of Jane, died owning 200 acres in Augusta; Jane Holmes; George Braden; Matty Jones, wife of Peter Jones; Polly Anderson, wife of George Anderson; Ann Buckley, wife of John Buckley (John Buckley has separated from his wife and moved out of State); Edward Braden; John Braden; Hannah Hendrick, wife of Henry Hendrick (Edward, John and Henry Hendrick and wife have moved out of Commonwealth), are children and representatives of Edward Braden. Edward died about 1806. George answers that Jane was born before marriage of father and mother.
Edward Braden arrived in America about 1753
was an indentured servant to William Anderson. William Anderson received a
land grant of 1000 acres from King George II in 1738. Perhaps William Anderson
paid Edward Braden's passage to America. After a period of indentured servitude,
Edward would then be free to pursue his own interests. In the early years
Edward had his last name spelled "Breeden" most often, but also
Breden, Breedon, Braiden, Bradan, and Braden. One of his descendents now living
in Staunton, Virginia, still spells it "Breedon" in correspondence
a few years ago. The first official record found of Edward was an agreement
from the Augusta Co., Va. records that reads as follows: "May 17, 1758
Edward Breedon, indentured servant of William Andreson, agrees to serve William
twelve months longer in consideration of William's supporting Edward's daughter
Mary Breedon. "Edward provided for his small daughter, even though he
had to stay indentured for another year. What happened to Edward's wife? Who
was she? It appears we may never know. We know more about Edward's second
wife, Elizabeth sometime after 1758 Edward Braden married Elizabeth (maiden
name unknown), and together they had eight children. Both Elizabeth and Edward
already had one child each. Edward had Mary and Elizabeth had Jane. It is
likely that Elizabeth was the widow of Matthew Erwin. Edward Braden, our first
known ancestor in America, is believed to be of Scots-Irish decent. He arrived
in America in 1753, as an indentured servant. An indentured servant is one
who traded his labor for a period of time in exchange for passage to the new
world. The first census of the United States, taken in 1790, was "To
Innumerate The Inhabitants of the Present States of Connecticut, Delaware,
Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New York,
New Jersey, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee,
Vermont, and Virginia." Unfortunately, the returns for Virginia, Tennessee,
Delaware, Georgia, Kentucky, and New Jersey were destroyed when the British
burned the capitol at Washington D.C. during the War of 1812. We therefore
have to use state census and tax rolls for our research of the late 1700's.
From these records we find that Edward Braden owned Property in Augusta Co.,
Va. Records found in abstract of land grant surveys 1761-1791, a man named
George Finley had property surveyed and found he adjoined the property of
Edward Braden, date of survey was 25 January 1772. In Va. taxpayers 1782-1787,
Edward Braden is showed owning one slave in Augusta Co., Va. Records of Augusta
County, Virginia 1745-1800, shows Edward Braden Sr., Edward Braden Jr., and
George Braden as witness to the will of William Anderson, approved, June court,
1794, by all the witness. Edward Braden is shown as surety for the marriage
bond of Peter Jones and Martha Braden, his daughter. The date of the bond
was 1 December 1792. Edward Braden served as surety 13 February 1797 for daughter
Sarah Braden and Joseph Russell. Edward Braden died without leaving a will
in June 1805. Sometime after 9 May 1807 (date of wife Elizabeth's will),-Braden
vs Braden- was filed in Augusta Co.,Va. George Anderson and Wife Mary, Henry
Hendrick and wife Hannah, John Braden, Peter Jones and wife Martha, George
Braden, Elizabeth Braden, Ann Buckley (wife of John Buckley), Edward Braden,
Jinny Holmes (wife of James Holmes), and Sarah Russell (wife of Joseph Russell)
filed suit against their father's estate to obtain their inheritance. Sometime
later another suit was filed, -Holmes et ux vs Braden- complainants were James
Holmes and Jane, his wife, apparently suing the estate and other heirs for
Janes portion of the estate. Daughters Elizabeth Braden and Sarah Braden Russell
were not named in the suit. George Braden who had been named administrator
of the estate 23 December 1805 along with Peter Jones (Martha's husband)

Edward married and had several children. He went to Tennessee with brother John.
Edward Braden could have been born as early as 1750 or as late as 1770. Edward Braden's son James Braden reported in the 1880 census that both his parents were born in Virginia. He died 1848 or later (will written 1848) Grainger Co., Tn. This same information would also be for his wife . She is mentioned in his will. The settlement of Edward Braden Sr. wife's estate in 1810 showed Edward Braden Jr. was no longer living in Virginia.
There was an Edward Braden on the tax rolls in Grainger Co., Tn. ,as a landowner in Grainger Co.,Tn. in both 1799 & 1805.

The names and birth dates for John and Sarah Braden's children come from a Bible kept by Sarah (Buell) Braden, wife of Francis Braden, son of Samuel Braden and Susannah Crobarger. Revolutionary War soldier - see pensions application s.1643 VA., John Braden. John moved to Tennessee in 1792. Braden (Bredon), John .s.1643.1832 Claiborne County, Tennessee. John Braden of said county, age 72, declares he entered service as a substitute for his father Edward Braden in the Company of Capt. John Young under Maj. George Moffiett and marched from Augusta County, Va., to the Big Levels in Greenbrier County and from there to the Little Levels where he was stationed until discharged. This was a three-month tour. In Sept. 1771 he was drafted for three months in the Company of Capt. William Henderson and Regiment of Maj. William Boyer and marched to Fort Macintosh on the north side of the Ohio River and then about 100 miles further to Fort Tuscaroway, they marched back to Fort Macintosh and he was mustered out of service. In Jan 1781 he was drafted for three months in the Company of Capt. James Trimble under Col. Sampson Mathiss, Col. William Boyer and Maj. Alexandria Roberson and marched from Augusta County to Fredericksburg and then to Bowling Green and to the James River and crossed a little below Cabin Point and marched by Smithfield to Portsmouth where he was stationed until his term expired in June 17891 he was drafted for twenty days and marched from Augusta County through Richmond to Hickory Nut (Neck) Church under Col. Joseph Patterson, he was afterward attached to the company of Capt. Zachariah Johnson and was in sight of a battle at Hot Water and was what was called a flanker at the battle. He joined the Army commanded by Gen. William Campbell, Gen. Morgan, Gen. Muhlenburg and Gen. Wayne near said church and on 4 July was ordered by Gen. Campbell to take three men with him to guard (or rather watch the roads as spies) two roads which led into the main road from Richmond to Williamsburg. The enemy came. One of the enemies was shot by his co-spy. He was taken prisoner and was a prisoner four days and then exchanged. While he was a prisoner the battle was fought near Jamestown. Col. Boyer was taken prisoner at the battle. He was discharged there. He served nine months and twenty days. He moved to Tennessee in 1792. 9 Jan 1841, Claiborne Co., Tennessee, Sarah (x) Braden gives power of attorney to John Hunter to collect her pension. She has lived in said county twenty-two years. 15 Jan 1841, Claiborne County, Tennessee, the court certifies that John Braden Died 3 Aug 1840 in Claiborne Co., Tenn. and Sarah Braden is his widow. John Bredon (corrected to Braden) of Claiborne Co., Tennessee, Private in the Company of Capt. Young in the regiment of Col. Boyer in the Virginia Line for nine months and twenty-one days, was placed on the East Tennessee pension roll at $32.33 per annum under act of 1832. Certificate 22022 was issued 27 Sept. 1833. John Braden's declaration of service was sworn to by Samuel McBee, clergyman, whose great- granddaughter Louisa McBee married John's great-grandson Milton Lafayette Braden.

WILLIAM BRADEN SON OF JOHN AND SARAH
William Braden married Julia McHaffie in Tennessee. William and Julia came to Missouri about 1835. They traveled in wagons drawn by yokes of oxen. At first they settled near what is now the city of Springfield in Greene County, they settled on the Finley River in Christian County, near some of Julia's brothers. William and Julia reared six children there. William was a farmer and a stockman as well as a tanner. He built a bark mill on his place. He was skilled with a broad axe and built his home of large logs, all hewn to a smooth wall inside and out. He is said to have hewn the logs for the first store in Springfield, Mo. William and Julia lived on the land they homesteaded until Williams's death in 1895. He is buried in the McHaffie Cemetery in Christian County, Missouri. After the Civil War, William wrote some of his brothers. William must have had a trunk or wooden box in the attic where he kept his papers. We have him to thank for the letters from brother Samuel and Andrew. The picture kept of his brother Andrew is interesting. Andrew was sort of a round faced similar to some of us today and was short and sort of potbelly.
