Bible as Literature

The Bible is a a key work in Western literature -- referenced in literarally thousands of other texts. It is difficult for a student to analyze college-level literature without being familiar with some of its more basic aspects. Since our class is college-bound, we will read excerpts from the King James Bible and read a few of the most famous stories (such as Noah's Ark , David and Goliath, Good Samaritan, etc) in order to compare them to some of the Greek myths we have studied. Please note that we will not being working with these stories as religious texts, but as part of the common knowledge base to which most educated adults, regardless of religion, can reference. We will also study some of the literary techniques found in the poetry (in Psalms and Song of Solomon ) and proverbs (in Proverbs and Ecclesiastes ) as preparation for writing our own poetry and proverbs.
