Expectations: Students must expect a rigorous schedule both in and out of class. Homework will count towards their grades. Grades will be posted and updated regularly, and students must take full responsibility for their coursework and grades. If a student is having difficulty, they should take the initiative to arrange for help with the teacher after school. Grading Each assignment has a certain number of points associated with it. At the end of the marking period, grades are determined by dividing the total number of points achieved by the total number of points possible. Grade percentages are
Typical point values for assignments:
Grades are based upon content, format and mechanical correctness unless otherwise noted. Students will be required to complete a self-evaluation for assignments with high point values (those above 50 points). Some assignments will involve peer review, but the final decision about grades will rest with the teacher. Unanticipated Absences and Tardies- Excused Students are responsible for checking the record of classwork (either in our class folder, or online at our class website www.cjgilbert.net), writing down what they missed, and making-up their work and turning it in a timely fashion. If a student misses a test, they must arrange a time outside of school to make it up. For every day absent, they have two days within which to make-up any work missed. If the work is not finished within that time, it will be late and be reduced in credit 10% for each additional day. NOTE : Students are only allowed to make up work for excused absences. Acceptable excuses include school-related activity, court appointment, funeral, or illness. Usually, a parent phone call is sufficient if the student is ill, however if “sick days” become excessive then the student may be asked to provide documentation by a physician's note. Total Number of Absences As outlined in the student handbook, students who have more than five absences will have to make up 45 minutes per missed period in order to get credit for the class. The student must get the form from their grade office and have it signed by their parent/guardian before the time can be made up. If a student wishes to appeal, they should see their grade office. Pre-arranged Absences If an absence is arranged in advance, such as for a school trip or a family vacation, then all work is due the day the student returns. Any work received after that day will be subject to late penalties. Unexcused Absences Students may not be allowed to make up any in-class activities, including quizzes and tests, for unexcused absences. Unexcused Tardies Punctuality is important for both the individual student's learning and for the class as a whole. The first tardy results in a warning, the second in a parent contact, and any additional tardies result in penalties per the handbook. Late Work Because I care about student learning, and because students are still learning to manage their time, I will accept papers and projects late. However, late assignments will lose significant points:
* Percentages are calculated from the total points possible If students have unusual circumstances and they see the teacher well before the original deadline, then they may be able to negotiate a later deadline so that their work will not be counted late. If a student is present in class and chooses to not do a daily assignment in class, NO CREDIT AND NO LATE WORK ACCEPTED! Re-do Because I care about student success, students may “learn” from their mistakes and re-do major assignments. Students must attach the original and its grading sheet to the back of any revisions. Cheating/Plagiarizing As outlined in the student handbook, if a student is caught cheating, allowing another to cheat off of his or her paper, or plagiarizing, then that student may receive no points for that assignment. If it should twice more, then the student fails the marking period. Plagiarism includes borrowing someone's ideas without giving them credit and/or borrowing their particular way of phrasing an idea. NOTE : The teacher may revise or add to any of these policies at her discretion, but the students will be given sufficient notice before any policy changes take effect. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear parent(s): You should have received a copy of these policies and been asked by your child to sign a slip to verify that you had received a copy of the syllabus packet, including the overview of our texts, the grading and attendance policies, the list of necessary supplies, and the methods of contacting the teacher, and that you reviewed them with your child. Here are links to the rest of the syllabus packet for Sophomore English and Advanced Sophomore English. If you did not receive the packet or sign the slip, please feel free to contact me directly.
