For online discussions, I recomment Nicenet.org. It's free, secure, easy to use and does not use advertising. Here is a Introduction to Nicenet that can be passed out to students. (Be sure to personalize it with the names of the novels you are reading and be sure to actually set up the discussion topics in Nicenet ahead of time). Here is troubleshooting guide for the most common newbie mistakes made by students when learning how to post. Here is the scoring rubric I use to grade participation (although obviously I would modify it depending on how long we had in the lab or how complex the discussion was). Here is a sample activity for students to use Nicenet and an online archive to research and then discuss how Shakespeare used Plutarch as a resource for Julius Caesar.
