Antigone

We will be reading Sophocles' Antigone- a Greek tragedy that starts after a civil war in which two brothers have fought on different sides. The King rules that the brother loyal to the winning side will be buried with honor, but the other traitorous brother will be cursed and left to rot. Antigone, sister to the two brothers, must chose whether to abide by the law of the King or to abide by the law of the gods (which says that everyone deserves to be buried). Her decision to bury her brother leads to a series of conflict and debates over how to decide what is right.

Antigone is actually the third play in a trilogy by Sophocles. The first two plays had to do with her father, the infamous Oedipus.

As we read the play, for each of the main characters (Antigone, Ismene, Sentry, Creon, Haimon, and Tierisias) you will take notes on a character graphic organizer.

We will be reading this play primarily in class, as our homework time will be reserved for work on the literary analysis paper being writing on Speak.
