Learn About: Patterns

The children will have fun learning about the letter Q and what words start with Q, such as Queen - they will make a queens crown with jewels, build a mini castle for the queen out of toilet paper and paper towel rolls. Learn about the quarter, do coin rubbings, play store, make their own play money. There are Quiet Time activities that provide hands on fun and a many other surprises. There are also shape review activities and color review activities.

Letter Activities

Using the provided letter Q outline do one of the following:

Glue small letter Q’s in the outline
OR
Paint it with a Q-tip
OR
Draw Q’s in the outline
OR
Color the Q and cut it out, glue it to a piece of construction paper.

Color Review

Look through magazines for different colors, identify the colors, cut them out, glue them on paper and label each color.
OR
Divide a paper plate in six pie sections using a marker or pencil, have the children color each section a different color, label each color
OR
Use paint, mix your two favorite colors to make a new color.
OR
Assign each child to wear a specific color that day, look at the colors being worn, have the children stand in a line representing a rainbow.

Shape Review

Look through magazines for different shapes, identify the shapes, cut them out, glue them on paper and label each shape.
OR
Look around the room for shapes, identify them, find matching shapes.
OR
Cut shapes from assorted colors of paper, make a collage by gluing them to a larger piece of paper.
Or
Use the shape page included in any manor you wish.
OR
Cut shapes out of sponges, sponge paint a pretty design using all the shapes.

Number Review

Count to 20.
OR
Count how many children are present.
OR
Look at flash cards, identify the numbers
OR
Use the number page in any way you wish.
OR
Lay out a pile of small objects, paper clips, buttons, etc, count them in piles of 1, 5, 10, 15 and 20
OR
Practice making the numbers 1 - 9

Patterns

Use the provided pattern page and complete the activities as described on the page.

Letter Q Activities

Letter Q and Question Mark

Look through magazines for question marks and cut them out to glue on the Q. You can also look for the letter Q and do the same.

Quarter Rubbings

Make a large Q shape on a piece of paper. Make crayon rubbings of quarters on white paper using different color crayons. Cut out the rubbings and glue them on the big Q.

Quarters

Let the children look at some quarters. Now mix the quarters with some dimes and nickels and see if they pick out just the quarters.

Coin Sorting

Provide the children with a handful of assorted coins, have them sort them in piles by quarters, nuckels, dimes and pennies.

Design Your Own Money

Give the children a few coins and some paper money (real or pretend). Have them design a coin or a dollar bill.

Play Store

Make a pretend shopping center with pretend money. Mark some items for sale for 25 cents, see if the children can identify which items cost a quarter and which coin is the quarter.

Queens

Have the children decorate construction paper crowns. Use a Burger King crown for a great pattern. Decorate with markers, pretend jewels, etc.

Make a Queens Castle

Use toilet paper tubes, paper towel tubes, construction paper and small boxes to create a Queen’s castle. Paint and decorate it.

Make a Queens Robe

Use a piece of scrap flannel fabric, cut it so it fits the child like a robe ( a large circle with a slit up the front and a tie at the neck. Decorate it with fabric paint, glitter, sequins, etc.

Reading

Read a story about a queen or a princess, make up a different ending.

Quiet Time Activities

Spend fifteen minutes being quiet.

Read a story quietly.
Or
Draw a picture of you doing something quietly.

Quiet Games - Q Games

Mother and Baby Quail One child is the Mother Quail, the rest are baby quails. Have the Mother Quail start walking around the room. Then sing the song below, each time signaling one of the baby Quails to get in line behind the mother. Continue singing until everyone is in line. If desired, choose a new Mother Quail and play the

Silent Ball

Tossed a small ball or bean bag from child to child, without making any noise.
