Tower Clock TC2

(Click on image to enlarge it)

Design of this clock was started as an effort to reproduce an old E. Howard tower clock design electronically in a 3-D CAD program called Solidworks. As the design effort progressed it evolved into a new design which merged time tested mechanisms with some bits of current technology such as substituting modern backstop clutches for spring loaded clicks.

This clock was designed to drive four 10 ft diameter dials, strike the hour, and chime any one of three tunes on the quarter hour. It was designed to be weight driven and wound by electric gearmotors (not shown). Depending on space available for weight drop, this clock could run as long as one week between windings.

Since the E. Howard Clock Company and all of the other major builders stopped building mechanical tower clocks a number of years ago, before 3-D CAD existed, this could possibly be the first mechanical tower clock ever built electronically. Almost all modern tower clocks are electric.

The picture you see here is a screen shot from the Solidworks model. No drawings for this clock have been made. Maybe someday....., when someone wants to build it.
