Baby Steps
Buy and install 1 fluorescent light bulb
Install and use a clothesline at least once a week during the summer
Buy a water heater wrap (they’re only about $10)
Insulate your doors and windows (and water pipes!)
Reuse paper that is “goos” (“good on one side”)
Turn down your thermostat and water temperature settings – 120º for water, 68º for heat (55º when you’re asleep or not home)
Unplug electronic equipment when you aren’t using it, so it doesn’t draw power
Drive the speed limit – It will save you gas!
Turn out the lights whenever you leave the room
Do laundry in cold water (or at least warm) instead of hot
Install low flow showerheads
Only run the dishwasher when it’s full and use the air dry cycle instead of heat
Replace air conditioner and furnace filters; clean your fridge’s condenser coils once a year
Close curtains and shades at night
Start recycling aluminum, glass, plastic and paper, if you haven’t already
Do errands in the car only when you’ve got at least 2 or 3 to do in one area
Buy local produce – it saves energy used in shipping
Take short showers instead of baths – they take a lot less water
Turn off the water while brushing your teeth, washing dishes, etc., and repair leaky faucets
