Jingle Bell Skate Tournament

Game 1: Triboro 2
Medford 2
  • For the opening game of the tournament, we were matched up against a superior Medford team but, as he has done many times this season, Nick kept us in the game. We approached the end of the third period down by a score of only 2 - 0. With just over 2 minutes left in the game, Andrew scored on a wraparound from behind Medford's net assisted by hard work from Graeham and Robby S. who kept the play in the offensive zone. After the following face-off, we kept the pressure in Medford's end allowing us to pull Nick for an extra attacker. With another face-off deep in Medford's zone, the puck went back to Glumly, er I mean Tommy at the point; he passed it up to Tyler who lofted it high towards the goal. The Medford goalie positioned himself ready to make the save but just as the airborne puck approached him, a Medford defender reached up and redirected it into the open side of the net. Triboro earned an exciting and hard fought tie.

Game 2: Triboro 4
Woonsocket 0

  • Our opponent for game 2 was a gritty Woonsocket team. An early goal by Graeham would prove to be all that was needed as Nick earned his 1st tournament shutout and sixth of the season. Chris and Ryan (2) added goals with assists going to Graeham (2), Ryan (2) and Robby S. (3). Although they had no points to show for their efforts, the line of Andrew, Tyler and Jay pressured the Woonsocket goaltender relentlessly and the defensive corps of Tommy, Brad, Chris and Seth (2 penalties???) chipped in for a final of Triboro 4, Woonsocket 0.

Game 3: South Boston 5
Triboro 2

  • Game 3 started against what initially seemed an evenly matched South Boston team. Unfortunately, it soon became evident that a player from a much higher level had been inserted into their lineup. Regardless, at the end of the first period we held a 2 to 1 lead on goals from Graeham, assisted by Andrew and Robby S., and Ryan assisted by Jay and Tyler. As the second period began, the South Boston ringer continued to showboat with end to end rushes that would eventually result in their regaining the lead. The ringer notwithstanding, we played them tough with numerous scoring opportunities and outstanding goaltending by Nick. The final score of South Boston 5, Triboro 2 is not indicative of the true nature of the game. Take away their "special" player, who was not only an offensive force but also broke up many of our scoring opportunities on defense, and the final could have easily ended in at least a tie, which would have given us a chance at making the playoffs.

Summary:

  • As evidenced from the above, everyone, players, coaches and parents should be proud of the teams performance. We tied a superior team, beat a somewhat evenly matched team and lost to a cheating team. Added to the fun and excitement was the tournament party hosted by Team Manager Mrs. Sullivan. It should be noted that while this was going on, we were still awaiting word on whether or not we were in the playoffs. The bad news was not to come until almost 9:00 that evening.

Coca-Cola
Tournament of Champions

Game 1: Twin City 3
Triboro 0
  • Triboro suffered a tough loss in the opening game of the Coca-Cola Tournament of Champions being held at the New England Sports Center. Maybe it was that both teams (Triboro Squirt #4 and #5) had just ended long but exciting seasons or perhaps it was the players' lack of familiarity with each other. Whatever the case may be, Triboro could not come up with the winning combination to beat a tough Twin City team. One highlight of the game was Nick's solid goaltending.

Game 2: Shrewsbury SK 3
Triboro 0

  • Once again, as is so often the case in tournament play, Triboro Squirt #4 (and #5) played against an upper level team. Although, Triboro gave it a valiant effort and Nick was beyond outstanding in goal, a respectable 3-0 loss was the best Triboro could do.

Game 3: East Boston 2
Triboro 1

  • For the first time in the tournament, Triboro faced an evenly match team in East Boston. Robby S. got Triboro on the board first midway through the second period as he banged home the puck in a goal mouth scramble (Andrew G. and Graeham drew the assists). Unfortunately, East Boston tied the game only nine seconds later and, shortly after their first goal, scored what would prove to be the game winner. Andrew J. was solid in goal keeping Triboro in the game and giving them the opportunity pull him for an extra attacker in the final minute of play. Triboro had excellent chances to pull even but could not send home the tying goal.

Summary:

  • Although Triboro did not win any games, the first two losses where against teams from a higher level and even then, the final scores where respectable, 3-0. This, along with a hard fought 2-1 loss in the final game should make Triboro's players and their families proud of their efforts.
