WESLEY GOTHARD SHOOTS HIS WAY TO STATE CHAMPIONSHIP

Livingston, TN - Wesley Gothard managed a thirteen point lead over the nearest competitor to shoot his way to the 2008 Tennessee State BB-gun Championship. This was not and easy task. Gothard had to have a 100 on a test of shooting safety and the rules of competition, managed a 93 in prone, sneaked by with 86 standing, managed a whopping 93 in sitting and ended with 89 in kneeling. This was topped off with an 87 in the shoot off for a total of 548. Fellow team member, Brady Riddle, came in second with 535. And Jarrod Hof also from the Bend of the River Possums was third with 531.

The test portion of the match ended with four perfect 100s. Gothard and Riddle were not in contention leaving Hunter Tidwell From Montgomery Bell Academy in Nashville (MBA) in first place and Jackson Crook from MBA in Second. To break the tie, the shooters had to write the Code of the BB-Gun rifleman. Tyler Powell from MBA was third with 98.

The next stage of the match was prone or laying on your belly. Jonathan Kelly from Cookeville was first with 94 and 5 center shots. Center shots are holes almost in the center of the black bullseye. Edward Brown from Livingston was second prone with 94 and 3 centers. Third place went to Alex Marcus from Cookeville with 92 plus 3 centers over Hunter Tidwell with 92 plus 1 center.

Standing is the position with the least support. Alex Marcus managed a nice 87 for first honors. Second went to Jackson Crook with 78 plus 2 centers. Third place was held down by Eamon Morris from Nashville with 78 plus 1 center.

Every one likes sitting. The scores are usually as high as prone which is more stable. Jonathan Kelly was first with 94. Alex Marcus was in second with 92 and Drew Murray from Cookeville was third with 91 plus 2 centers over Zach Connor with 91 plus 1 center.

The last regular position was kneeling. Eamon Morris lead the way with 90. Drew Murray was second with 88 and Edward Brown was third with 88.

The match consisted of four positions, prone, standing, sitting and kneeling, with test for 500 possible points and a shoot off Olympic style shooting in the standing position for another 100 points. The shoot-off is one shot at a time with the scores read after each shot. It is fun for the shooters that are trying to move into a higher finish position and the spectators. Alex Marcus did move up two positions over Jonathan Kelly and Hunter Guye.

The Bend of the River Possums swept to another state championship with the team score of 2177. the team was Wesley Gothard, Brady Riddle, Jonathan Kelly, Drew Murray and Keith Morris. The alternates were Jared Hof and Eamon Morris. The second place Jaycee team also went to Bend of the River with Alex Marcus, Danielle Tayes, Zach Connor, John Allen Tinkell and Pistol Workman. The alternates were Curtis Smith, Dustin Bean and Makayla Bean. The team had 1926 points. The third place Jaycee team was the Livingston Jaycees with 1665. This team had Edward Brown, Anna Brown, Rachel Mendenhall, Brigham Robbins and Benjamin Mendenhall. The alternates were Jeremiah Mendnehall, Tyler Carmack, Joseph Mendenhall, Mariana Munoz, and Sierra Clayton. The Big Red MBA team was the first Open Team at 2068. The team was Hunter Guye, Hunter Tidwell, Jackson Crook, Aidan Davis and Bo Griswald. The alternates were Hunter Crabtree, Chris Hooks, Tyler Powell and Christian Sargent. The 4-H clubs of Tennessee were represented by the Cumberland County 4-H team of Benjamin Lee, Stephanie Kohlepp and Josh Kemmer.

Every one had a good time. Lunch was provided by Dairy Queen, Jerry's IGA, Food Lion, and McDonald s all of Livingston. Napa Overton County Parts and Mr. T's provided a T-shirt for each shooter and Bass Pro of Nashville provided many door prizes.

This is the last BB-Gun shoot of the regular season. The next BB-Gun match is the International match, which is in Bowling Green Kentucky June 30 and July 1st. All persons are welcome to attend.

The Bend of the River gun safety and practice program runs on Saturdays from 9 until 11 in the morning. The Program begins in January and continues until the state championships in April, The program is open to individuals from the age of 8 to 15. Both boys and girls are encouraged to participate. Many of the current college and Olympic shooters have come from this program. The Jaycee B-B gun program has been in existence for 39 years. Teams from the Bend of the River have been a part of shooting for over thirty years. The cost of the program is only $50. Guns, BBs, and targets are provided for those in the program.
