BOB WINS BIG AT AUGUST SHOOTING MATCH

COOKEVILLE, TN - Bob Beard from Martin was the big time winner in the rifle match held at the Bend of the River. Beard was returning to his home after participating at the National Matches at Camp Perry. Beard had a sizzling score of 729 - 12 X. In Second Place was Granny Dale from Sparta with 710 - 8X. The Marksman class was lead by Allen Beard from Trenton at 589. The Unclassified shooters had Eric Thurman from Sparta in the lead with 445 - 4X.

The weather was as hot as the scores. It was 92 degrees and humidity at 91%. It was rough hot shooting. Every one knew to and drank a lot of water. Granny Dale is on a come back from major illness. Dale managed to move his sights correctly this match. He did have a mix of ammo that let him down for the rapid sitting. Eric Thurman posted a fine 445 for his first time in a rifle match. It was a new experience that every one should try.

The rifles used in this match are civilian versions of the current military rifles which are well suited for this type of shooting. This match had one of the M-1s, two M-1As and an AR-15. All most all the firearms were of the recent military type firearms. You may purchase the WW II M-1 Garand from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. You can now apply for 8 Garands a year. You can get further information from Civilian Marksmanship Program, P. O. Box 576, Port Clinton, OH 43452, (888) 267-0796. On the net at: http://www.odcmp.com/ .

The match consists of 80 shots. There were 20 shots standing, 20 shots sitting rapid (10 shots in 60 seconds), 20 shots prone rapid (10 shots in 70 seconds) and 20 shots prone slow fire. It is all shot at 100 yards. The Xs are shots near the center of the target that are used to break ties. You never know how much fun this can be until you give it a try.

You too may support collegiate shooting by donating to the Jerry Pardue or Sgt. Jim Newkirk Scholarship fund at Tennessee Tech, TTU Box 5047, Cookeville, TN 38505.

The next match sponsored by the Bend of the River is a 2700 pistol match August 13, 2006. The next High Power Match is September 3rd. Contact Charlie Pardue at (931) 498 - 2829 or 2880 Standing Stone State Park Hwy., Cookeville, TN 38506 or cpardue@multipro.com for additional information.
