COOKEVILLE, TN - Granny Dale from Sparta won the Labor Day 'Possum Round Up High Power match held at the Bend of the River. Dale won by 100 points with the score of 701-9X. This just happened to be the same score that Dale had in the match last month. In second place and High Lady shooter, was Nancy Pardue from Cookeville with 600-5X.
It was the first half way decent weather since June, three months ago. Dale was using his M-1A for the first time in several years. His comment was that he had an X ring capable gun and an 8-ring shooter. Nancy Pardue was using her mouse gun (AR-15 sporter) and seemed to enjoy the match more than earlier matches.
The rifles used in this match are civilian versions of the current military rifles which are well suited for this type of shooting. This match had one of the AR-15 and one M-1A rifles. The match consists of 80 shots. There were 20 shots standing, 20 shots sitting rapid (10 shots in 60 seconds), 20 shots prone rapid (10 shots in 70 seconds) and 20 shots prone slow fire. It is all shot at 100 yards. The Xs are shots near the center of the target that are used to break ties. You never know how much fun this can be until you give it a try.
