DUNCAN SNEAKS WIN
COOKEVILLE, TN -Jay Duncan from Cookeville eaks out a win in the Bastille Day High Power Rifle match at the Bend of the River. Duncan managed a 624 in only his second match. Many shooters take several years to manage such a fine score. Mike May from Cookeville was second with a 602.
There was a threat of rain all day. The first two relays had just a miserable drizzle. It was hot and sticky, but every one drank a lot of water to help make it through the day. Duncan was amazed how much easier it was to shoot the AR-15 than the M-1 Garand. It did not bruise the body and did not bloody the nose.
The rifles used in this match were the AR-15, civilian versions of the current military rifles, that are well suited for this type of shooting. You may purchase the WW II M-1 Garand from the Civilian Marksmanship Program. You can now apply for 8 Garands a year. You can get further information from Civilian Marksmanship Program, P. O. The match consists of 80 shots. There were 20 shots standing, 20 shots sitting rapid (10 shots in 60 seconds), 20 shots prone rapid (10 shots in 70 seconds) and 20 shots prone slow fire. It is all shot at 100 yards. The Xs are shots near the center of the target that are used to break ties. Any one over the age of 15 is welcome. You never know how much fun this can be until you give it a try.

The next NRA High Power Rifle match will be held June 1st, 2008 at the Bend of the River. The June match is for shooters with M-1 Garand rifles only.
