Sithbane's Star Wars Tribute

The journey is complete ...

Star Wars Episode III -- Revenge of the Sith has finally arrived. It is a bittersweet moment for a longtime fan like me. After experiencing the movie, I was compelled to collect my thoughts on the completion of "Star Wars" in an essay. It contains some spoilers about the movie. My Reflections on the Star Wars Saga

Here is Dirk Sithbane, hero of the battle of Yavin.

This is a old family photograph of Dirk Sithbane, a rebel pilot who took part in the Battle of Yavin, in the assault on the first Death Star. The proud name of Sithbane dates back to dim years of the Old Republic; "Sith" is a reference to those Dark Jedi, and "bane" means a cause of death, destruction or ruin. Therefore, Sithbane means a cause of ruin for the Sith. Another notable "bane" was Durin's Bane, the balrog of Khazad-dum, so called because of the murder of the dwarf lord Durin, as described in "The Lord of the Rings."

I created this costume to wear to the premiere of "Star Wars, The Special Edition" some years ago. I was so excited about the movie that I figured a lot of people would dress up. As it turned out, the fans might have dressed up in Los Angeles, but they didn't in Birmingham, Alabama. Nobody but me, that is. I was the ONLY person dressed up at the theater, marking me with the Star Wars supergeek badge of honor, I think. I was the envy of some of other Star Wars geeks, who seemed to wish they'd dressed up, too, after they saw me. I felt a little conspicuous, but the theater manager was so impressed by my effort that he admitted me and my family for free. So there. I carried my toddler son Matthew into the theater on my shoulders.

The movie was a thrill, perhaps even greater than when my uncle Steve took me to see the original Star Wars in Boston in the summer before I entered the ninth grade. The only thing that diminished the experience was the fan sitting behind me who said, "Sweet!" at every new special effect, which was every few minutes. If I'd had a lightsaber, I would have used it.

On a related note, see my commentary about the latest Star Trek movie, "Nemesis." The essay contains spoilers, so don't read it if you haven't seen the movie and intend to. The essay also contains my opinion on how the Star Wars novels presented the demise of Chewbacca. The essay is called Immortal Heroes.
