Artist Reception for Fujiko Isomura at linden's

Linden's of Ellison bay will host internationally-renowned artist Fujiko Isomura at an aritst's reception on Saturday, August 3, from 5 - 7 pm. Located in a former church at the corner of Hwy 42 and mink River Road in Ellison Bay, Linden's has featured exotic Asian antiques, art, and collectibles since 1996.

Fujiko Isomura's artwork is an exploration of the relationship between the individual self and external influences. Having been raised in an Eastern society in which security largely arises from conformity, and then immigrating to the West, where the "self" is more distinctly emphasized, Isomura says her work reveals her ongoing struggle to understand the meaning of her self within the larger context of society.

Utilizing an ancient eastern art form of applying gold leaf to images, which she applies through modern artistic techniques, Isomura combines not only radically different time periods, but also radically different cultures. "Many cultures have applied gold leaf to pictures," Isomura explains. "It came to Japan from China and Korea along with the Buddhist faith and the painting of icons. In the sixteenth century, Japan developed its own unique styles and techniques, especially in secular painting. This is the style I use in my work today. As the modern artist, I begin my work by computer manipulation, collaging, and the printing of images. I then return to the formal art techniques of painting and gold leafing to complete my work. In my work, i bring together old and new icons and images from American and Japanese culture."

Linden's of Ellison bay is considered to be one of the midwest's top destinations for Asian art and is open from May through October. Linden's sister gallery, Celadon, is located on the west side of Madison, Wisconsin. For more information, call (920) 854-2487.
