Applying gold leaf
1. Washing hands if you would like to avoid leaving fingerprints on the leaf.
...(Oil from our hands will oxidize a copper based metal leaf.)
2. Applying a sheet of metal leaf. After seeing demonstration, apply gold leaf using a supporting paper
...and tissue paper from the leaf let. (Supporting paper can be a poster board,
...which is cut to be a little bigger than the size of a metal leaf.)
3. Softly rubbing the gold leaf surface with cheesecloth for taking out the excess air.
4. If you wish, applying more leaf to the spots (cracks, breaks, and edges) which were missed for the first time.
......**If you would like to leave the cracks but still have sticky surface, you can seal it by sealer.
5. Try gathering the excess leaf after applying the leaf. They can be re-used for sprinkle technique for other projects.

Sealing the metal surface
Copper based metal leaf as well as genuine silver leaf will be oxidized and tarnished.
Therefore, we need to seal the surface if tarnishing is not desired by Crystal Clear, Acrylic spray,
and water/oil based sealer.

Vinegar acid reaction
Cooking vinegar normally contains 5% acidity. Use disposal gloves if your hands are sensitive.
Apple vinegar is not recommended.
1) Prepare paper towel, cotton strings, cotton cloth, etc.
2) Dip a paper towel into vinegar, squeeze it but leave it a little bit dump, and put it on the composition gold
...or copper leaf surface. The paper towel can be wrinkled or flattened over the leaf, which will create a different
...pattern onto the metal surface.
3) Put some kind of weigh on the paper towel. Wait until the leaf surface started to change the color and texture to
...the point you like. It takes 30 min to as long as you would like. More you wait, darker the color the result you get.
4) Once it reaches your desired coloration, seal the surface with Poryurathyne or matte finish acrylic spray
...to avoid further reaction. (But try spray on the edge to see if the color will react by the sealer first.)

Framing and presentation of your 2-D art
Frame: Wood or metal molding. (Color natural wood, brown, black, gold/gilded.)
Mat Window: White/off white, black, color from the piece. (Double mats with the same color mats.)
Glass: Protection for the artwork. Also it is better to have a space between glass and artwork.
...Humidity gets in and if the glass touches the artwork, the water will be push against it and ruin the artwork.
...A glass needs to be raised by a mat window or space bars.
There are many 2-D gilded sample images and gilding related web sites links on my web site at
