Season Format

There are three divisions at the YWCO for the Fall 2001 season, a 1st (competitive) division, a 2nd (competitive-recreational) division, and a 3rd (recreational) division. The divisions are determined by ability and not by either gender or age. At the end of the season, there will be promotion and relegation (familiar to all of you who are fans of international club soccer) between the 1st and 2nd divisions and between the 2nd and 3rd divisions. Successful teams in division 2 or 3 will have the opportunity to "go up" -- if they so choose -- and unsuccessful teams in the 1st and 2nd division will be relegated and thereby able to play at a level that best suits their talent. Promotion and relegation will be based on the regular season records and not the tournament playoff results.

Scoring System

The scoring and points system will be the same as it has for the past several years, namely the FIFA standard W/D/L (3/1/0). Tiebreakers will also be FIFA standard, with (1) goal difference and then (2) goals scored as the methods of resolving the position of teams in the table (standings). (3) Head-to-head results -- providing both teams played each other -- come next. If all else fails to resolve a tie in the standings, there is (4) the dreaded coin flip. Forfeited games accrue a 2:0 score to the winner.

Tournament

There will be a tournament at the end of the season. The top four teams in each division will qualify to play. Seeds will be determined by points earned in each regular season game. The tournament will be single elimination play-offs (1 v 4 & 2 v 3), with the winners advancing to the final. The tournament will be held the Sunday after the last regular season game.

Practice

The front fenced field, located on the corner of Barnett Shoals Rd. and Research Dr. is available from 5:30 PM until dark Monday and Wednesday for adult practices. The main fields are available on Fridays from 5:30 until dark. Adult players are requested not to move the goals on the main fields. These are specifically placed in preparation for youth games on Saturdays. During wet or rainy conditions, the Y will close the fields to protect their condition.

Rosters

Teams may have up to 15 players on their roster. Players are eligible to play only if they have signed the liability waiver and are listed on the roster. Teams playing with ineligible players will be forced to forfeit the match. Players cannot be added to the roster beyond the fourth game of the season.

Uniforms

All players are required to have like colored shirts for match play. Please contact the coordinator if your team needs shirts. Shirts will be provided by the league on an as-needed basis only. Unless you contact the coordinator, it will be assumed that your team needs no shirts.

Shin guards and appropriate soccer shoes (i.e. molded cleats, turf shoes) are mandatory. Players without shin guards and/or appropriate shoes will not be allowed to play.

Braces and casts must be made of a material that will not cause injury to other players or be properly covered. Players failing to adhere to this safety precaution will be asked to leave the field until this brace/cast has been covered.

Payment

All payments are due before the second game of the season. Any team failing to pay in full by the second game will no longer be able to play.

Sportsmanlike Conduct

The YWCO seeks to promote a fun and safe environment in which adults of all skill and fitness levels may play soccer. The YWCO asks that all participants be mindful of and pursue a good sportsmanlike conduct on the field. To this end, the following rules apply:

Fighting of any kind will not be tolerated. Players who instigate or exacerbate a fight may face permanent dismissal from the league, dependent upon the severity of their actions. Such dismissal would be based on the discretion of the coordinator. All players involved in a fight will be automatically suspended from the following two games.

Red Cards: All red cards will result in a minimum one game suspension. The league coordinator will determine the length of the suspension. The team may also be penalized -3 points from their overall point total. Two red cards in one season by one player may result in a six month suspension from the league. Players who are ejected from the field cannot be replaced.

Yellow Cards: 3 yellow cards in one season by a player equal one red card. The player and team will be treated as though the player had received a red card. Players receiving a yellow card must be substituted. If a team has no substitutes, the team must continue the match a player down.

Dissent Towards the Referees will not be tolerated! Referees will card (yellow or red) any player using any language directed against them and deemed un-sportsmanlike or disruptive to the match.

The Rules of Play

Any rules not listed below will be governed by the FIFA Laws of the Game.

Substitutions: Substitutions may be made on team possession, kickoffs, and yellow cards. There are no substitutions on corner kicks or fouls.

Goal Kicks: The goalkeeper may either dribble the ball in from the line (but cannot then pick up the ball with his/her hands) or may take 4 steps from the line and throw the ball in. The keeper has 10 seconds to put the ball into play.

Throw ins: The team with possession has 10 seconds to put the ball into play.

Fouls: All fouls will result in an indirect kick, unless the foul committed prevents a direct scoring opportunity in the defensive third of the field. In this case, a direct kick will be awarded.

2 Line Rule: The ball may not pass over two consecutive lines in the air. An indirect free kick will be awarded to the opposing team at the point from which the ball crossed the first line.

Slide tackling: Clean slide tackling (as defined by FIFA) is permitted in division 1 only. Players caught slide tackling in Divisions 2 or 3 will receive a verbal warning from the referee. A second offense will result in either a yellow or red card at the referee's discretion. All tackles from behind are considered a serious foul and will be carded.
