Congratulations to UEFA and Sports Appeal, winners of the Fall Tournament, Recreational Division and Mixed Division, respectively.
Doug Arnold has agreed to meet with the team captains (and any other interested players) next Monday, December 13th at 6 PM at the Mean Bean Restaurant on Gaines School Rd (around the corner from the Y).
Please spread the word to those who might not have net access. And please start thinking about some of the issues that we might want to talk about on Sunday.
There are two divisions at the YWCO for the 1999-2000 season, a Men's Recreational Division and a Mixed Recreational Division. There will be an 8 game fall season, followed by a Fall Tournament. There will also be a Spring Tournament at the conclusion of the Spring season, which will be at least 8 weeks and perhaps longer. Qualification for the Spring Tournament will be based on the Spring results only, just as the Fall Tournament will be based on the Fall results only.
This year, the Spring season will not be a "new" season, but will include the cumulative records for all teams who competed in the Fall. The purpose of the full year's season is to reward those clubs who have shown consistency over the full course of the year. For those of you familiar with professional soccer both here and elsewhere, think of the two tournaments as Cup competitions and the regular season as "The Championship".
With any luck, each division's two tournament winners (Fall and Spring) will play in a "Cup Winners Cup" the week after the Spring Tournament, and the winner of that match will play the winner of the year-long regular season (The Champion) in a "Super Cup".
The only significant modifications to play will be that each game will be comprised of two 30 minute halves (instead of 25 minutes of previous years) and there will be no slide tackling.
The scoring and points system will be the same as last year, namely the FIFA-standard W/D/L (3/1/0). Tiebreakers will also be FIFA-standard, with (1) goal difference and then (2) goals scored as the methods of resolving the position of teams in the table (standings). (3) Head-to-head results -- providing both teams played each other -- come next. If all else fails to resolve a tie in the standings, there is (4) the dreaded coin flip.
