Restoring the Courthouse

Activity 2

The restoration of the courthouse began in 1999. When the work was completed, the courthouse looked very much like it did when it was built in the late 1800's. The people of Polk County thought the Courthouse was worth saving. What are some reasons for saving a historic building like the Courthouse?  Write your ideas down.

Restoring an old building can be very expensive. The Polk County Courthouse Restoration Committee has made the following estimates for restoring some of the original features of the courthouse.

Antique heart pine flooring in public spaces - $20,000

Raising ceilings and restoring the plaster - $50,000

Light Fixtures - $60,000

Exterior blinds (shutters) - $100,000

Restoring the bell - $10,000

Raising money for these projects is not easy. Select one of the projects and plan a way to raise the money for it. Create a brochure or an advertisement that will encourage people to give to your project.
