Mystery of the Missing Cushion
By Jennifer
One day my friends Rachel, Alicia, Laura and I were riding our
bikes to the courthouse. When we arrived we got off our bikes and climbed
up the courthouse steps. We were expecting to hear the courthouse bell,
but we didn't hear anything. As we stepped inside the courthouse, someone
by the name of Bill led us to a room with benches. Most of them had red
cushions, but in the front one was missing.
Bill spoke up, "We hoped someone could solve the mystery,
but no one has yet. When I saw your add in the paper, I thought I'd give
you a call."
"What's the mystery?" asked Rachel.
"Well, strange things have been going on. As you can
see, the cushion has disappeared and you might have noticed that the bell didn't
ring because somebody broke it by pulling the rope too hard. At least that's
what we think. We have heard footsteps in the attic, but every detective
we've had has been too scared to go up there." Bill explained.
"Well, let us discuss the case," I said.
Bill started to walk away. "I'll be in my office, if
you need me," he said over his shoulder.
We sat down and thought. After a long time we decided to
go up in the attic. We called Bill and he showed us the way to the
attic. And as we climbed up the creaky attic stairs, we had a scary
feeling. But it turned out to be nothing at all, for when we reached the top we
saw a kid. He looked scared.
"Are you the one who took the cushion?" asked Rachel.
"And broke the bell?" I asked.
"And the one whose footsteps we heard?" asked Alicia.
"I am afraid so," answered the boy. "I ran away
from my parents, which I guess wasn't going to help."
We showed him to the steps where Bill was standing.
"Come here," said Bill. "I'll take you home."
That was the end of a mystery we'll never forget.
