The presence of a recessed portico is one indication that the architectural style of the Courthouse is Italianate rather than Greek Revival.

before restoration

A portico is a porch that has a roof supported by columns.   Porticos are often found at the front entrance of a building.  This portico is set back into the building and does not stick out beyond the front of the building except for the columns.  This type of portico is called recessed.
