The covered walkway and the shed covering the entrance to the basement of the Courthouse had to be removed. If you look above the doorway, you can see where a window had been before this door was installed. If you look closely, just behind the shed, you can see an external chimney. The following pictures show the removal of this chimney. |

The fire escape was removed and workmen began to restore the windows to their original locations. Why do you think they thought this particular window had once been a door? |

In some cases the windows had been filled in with bricks and in other cases they had once been doors. Sometimes doors were made into windows. Look for the lintels above the windows. Lintels are the white cross pieces above the windows and doors. The lintels on the courthouse are made of granite. They give support to the bricks above the window. |

There were ten fireplaces in the Courthouse, many of which had been closed off like the one you see on the left. The mantle on the right was relocated from an upstairs room that will become part of the jury room and restroom when the restoration is complete. The fireplace on the right was once briked up inside the vault in the old clerk of court's office. |
