The Ghost of the Polk County Courthouse
by Ryan
One cold stormy spring night in the 1800's a Civil War army
went marching by the Polk County Courthouse. Then a soldier with a body
over his shoulder scurried into the courthouse and tossed the body on the
floor. Then he ran out and kept on marching. The body was a dead sergeant
and it didn't die properly, so it became a ghost as soon as it hit the floor.
The next few days I heard that people who entered the
courthouse died after only a few paces. So then the courthouse was shut
down and only detectives could enter. So I went to the courthouse (because
I am was a detective) and showed them my metal detective badge. Then they
warned me, "They who enter may not come out." I took those words
seriously as I entered the courthouse.
As I entered I saw a blinding light. I jumped under the spiral
staircase to get away from the ghost I saw. When I saw no more light
through the cracks, I stepped out of the crawl space, but my shoe slipped
off. I didn't go back for it because I had no time. I saw something
lying on the floor, so I picked it up. It was a wooden bat. I thought it
would be good to have, so I kept it. Then after a few strides, I
remembered that it would be useless on a ghost, so I dropped it and it rolled
through a crack in the floor boards. I remembered that the only way to
kill a ghost was with fire, so I pulled up a loose floor board and took some
matches out and lit the board. I ran towards the ghost again. I put
the flame towards him and he shriveled up and died for good. I threw the
board down and ran out of the courthouse.
The attic burned, but not too bad, so I was still a hero.
The people who died before still haunt the courthouse.
