The large beam construction found in the Polk County Courthouse is quite unique.  Notice how the beam is tapered and then brought back to its original width. These beams were hewn by hand.

This vertical beam is L shaped and hewn from what must have been a massive tree.  Imagine hoisting this beam into place. 

Notches, pegs, and nails were used in the framework of the courthouse.  Notice the way the lower beams are notched or cut away to allow another beam to rest on top of it.  You can also see a mortise and tenon (see insert below).  The mortise is the hole
