This vertical beam is L shaped and hewn from what must have been a massive tree. Imagine hoisting this beam into place.Notches, pegs, and nails were used in the framework of the courthouse. Notice the way the lower beams are notched or cut away to allow another beam to rest on top of it. You can also see a mortise and tenon (see insert below). The mortise is the hole |
