Dondoko Taiko of Fort Worth
In Japan, they say the Taiko, the Japanese Drum, sounds like “dondoko dondoko dondoko”. That is where our group’s name originates. Various forms of Taiko have been used in Japan for well over 2000 years. It has its origin in the daily life of common people; farmers used Taiko in their prayers for rain, in festivals and in thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest. As well Priests used Taiko to dispel evil spirits and insects from the rice crops, Samurais used Taiko to instill courage in their warriors and fear into their enemies. The practice and performance of Taiko requires dedication, physical endurance and harmony with fellow players. Dondoko Taiko was started in February 1998 with 10 members. With the support of local friends, Mrs. Elaine Yamagata and the Fort Worth Japanese Society and our Sister City Nagaoka, we have performed in and around Fort Worth. Yukyu Taiko, our sister group in Nagaoka has sent us instructors from time to time to help us hone our skills and learn new songs. |
