| Emanuel Whetsel was the only son of Solomon Whetsel and Dora Crawford. Emanuel Whetsel may have been named E. Manuel., or Manuel The name listed on the 1870 Hawkins Co. Census, is "Manuel." He signed his name E.M., and his grandchildren remember him calling himself Emanuel or E. Manuel. His maternal grandfather's name was Emanuel. Emanuel worked for the railroad. His eyes were damaged as a result of working with welding tools and no eye protection. He suffered macular degeneration as a result of this damage. Emanuel and wife Dora were among the heirs who signed a contract with the Kingsport Waterworks, Inc., in 1917, for land owned by Paulser Whetsel and Sarah Dove Whetsel, Emanuel's grandparents, on Bays Mountain.
