This is what students saw when they read about Stone
Publishing Club at the beginning of the semester:
Now Hiring: See a concept through from start to finish as
we create, publish, advertise, and distribute the first ever
Stone Academy Staff Trading Cards. Interview and photograph teachers
in ways that you WON'T be seeing on the school web site. Discover
Mr. Holliday's favorite foods. Learn about Mrs. Knight's hobby.
You'll dabble in digital photography, desktop publishing, advertising,
and inventory control. Hours are short and pay is nonexistent,
but the on-the-job training is great!
Clubs
are a Friday afternoon activity for all 4th and 5th grade students.
Each semester, my club, the Stone Publishing Company ìhiresî
a group of
students who will create, publish, advertise, and distribute
staff trading cards.
Students write about each staff member, take photos of
them in original ways that will complement their written pieces,
and compose these elements into an attractive and interesting
card.
Students use digital cameras, and Pagemaker, a desktop
publishing software that is used by professional graphic designers
and publishers.
Each semester's group completes about 10 different
trading cards.
Cards are be packaged in sets that will be used by teachers
as incentive rewards, or sold in the school store.
Advertisements include posters, flyers, live or taped
commercials via Jumpstart News (Stone's daily TV broadcast),
and e-mail ads via classroom computers.
Students are involved in packaging, keeping up with inventory,
and filling orders.
Any profits from the sale of cards will go back into the
trading cards account to purchase materials, so that the project
can become self-supporting.

Art Note Cards
Students
have not yet been involved in the production of our note card
sets, except by creating the art work and poetry. The best
works in each category are chosen each year for publication and
in May, we select eight cards to make into an assortment, which
becomes the Stone card set for that year. There is a poetry
set and an art set. Many cards are published, but only
eight get into each set. Additional works of art are made
into gift card sets.
We have also published calendars illustrated with
student art. Mr. Benjamin, the art teacher, works with
Mrs. Slate to chose art. Mrs. Buto, the instructional coach
and former reading teacher, picks the poetry.
