HERB GROWING & PHARMACY PROGRAM
"take a lesson"

Learn to identify, propagate, cultivate, harvest and prepare medicinal herbs.

One 5-hour session per week for 25 weeks, March - October

Most classes taught at Mountain Gardens, North Carolina's premier demonstration garden of medicinal plants, with fully equipped herb shop & extensive research library.

Pay for sessions you attend: $15 each, $100 for any ten, or register for entire course: $225

BONUS: valuable handouts, seeds & plants, herbs and preparations to take home

Topics to be covered include:

Native (WNC) medicinal herbs: identification, uses and habitat / ecology
Propagation: seed, cuttings, division, etc.
Nursery practice
Selecting and developing garden habitats for herb cultivation
Cultivation, fertilization, maintenance
Harvest timing and techniques
Cleaning, slicing, drying and storage
Sustainable wildcrafting
Principles of formula compounding
Introduction to traditional Chinese herbalism
Important oriental herbs for cultivation in WNC - identification and habitat
Oriental herb processing techniques
Tonic herbalism: health promoting plants for longevity & rejuvenation
Herbal preparations: infusion and decoction
Making tinctures, extracts and other internal preparations
Making oils, salves, lotions and other external preparations
Preparation of medicinal wines and liqueurs
Entheogens: legal access to altered states
Seed harvesting, cleaning and storage

Each session will cover several topics, including plant I.D., some theory, more practice

Mountain Gardens is located in Celo, NC - one hour NE of Asheville, adjacent to Pisgah Nat'l Forest at the base of the Black Mtns. Our display gardens include the largest collection of medicinal herbs in the eastern U.S.

APRIL 14 Plant identification, uses, cultivation & ecology: a tour of Mountain "Paradise" Gardens and natural areas in adjacent Pisgah Nat'l Forest. Medicinal, edible & craft plants - the largest collection of useful plants in the southeast, including rare oriental herbs.

APRIL 20 Grow / gather your own medicine: How and where to grow or find, when and how to harvest and prepare, and chief uses of fifty or more of the most important medicinal herbs which can be easily cultivated or gathered in our area.

MAY 11 Make your own medicine: We'll harvest in-season herbs, then prepare tinctures, extracts, glycerites, oils, salves, syrups, etc. from both fresh and dried herbs.

JUNE 8 Chinese herbs for NC gardens: Propagation, cultivation and uses of the most important Chinese medicinals which are easily grown in our area. Unique opportunity to see more than 100 species, both live in the garden and dried / processed in our Chinese pharmacy.

JUNE 29 Tonic herbs for health and longevity: How to propagate, cultivate, prepare and use the most important rejuvenative, health promoting Chinese, Ayurvedic and native herbs. Classic formulas & combinations. Tonics are adaptogenic, immune-boosting herbs.

SEPTEMBER 7 Seed saving: Techniques for harvesting, cleaning and storing seeds, including wildcrafting, medicinal herbs, garden vegetables. We harvest several hundred varieties annually. Also, swapping and selling seeds; Kokopelli syndrome.
