MISSION: To promote the exchange of useful perennial species and selected cultivars: seeds, plants, tubers, scions, etc.

- To facilitate communication between persons interested in the same type of plants

- To collect information about these plants directly from the growers

- To encourage seed-saving and plant sharing within the permaculture community

- To provide an opportunity for collectors and breeders to earn extra income.

RULES & PROCEDURES: This exchange features useful perennial (and self-sowing annual) plants of the temperate zone, worldwide. ‘Useful’ includes plants employed for food, medicine, fiber & dye, fragrance, sacred and magical purposes, basketry and other crafts, etc. Cultivars of the common annual vegetables are very well covered by Seed Saver’s Exchange (Decorah, IA 52101), and there is no need to duplicate their efforts.

The catalog of plants & seeds available exists on line at the website listed above, where it may be consulted and used by anyone with access to the internet. Anyone may add listings to the catalog by downloading the listing form from that site, filling out, and returning it to me by e-mail; or you can request a copy of the form by mail, and return it to me by mail.

The form solicits the following information for each listing: botanical & common names, use & part used, description, habitat, hardiness, problems, performance, source, item being offered & price, dates available, contributors name, and comments. It is not necessary to include any of this information ( except name, item and price), but enough people do so as to make the catalog a valuable source of information about useful species.

Buyers order directly from contributors of the item(s) wanted (their addresses are in the catalog). It is not necessary to be a contributor to participate in the Exchange, but in keeping with our mission to encourage seed-saving and sharing, we encourage contributors by giving them a $1.00 discount on any item purchased through the Exchange. (Thus, a standard sample of 25 seeds lists @ $2.00, but contributors to the Exchange will pay $1.00). Contributors are free to set any price they like for the items offered, but must be willing to provide this discount to fellow contributors.

For persons without access to the internet, or who prefer a hard copy, a printout of the catalog will be available for $7.00. (You can probably get it cheaper by downloading and printing at a friend’s house or public library). Other than that, this Exchange is free to all (but if you send me a lot of entries to type, a donation for the service will be appreciated).
