New Years' 2008

Not content to while away another year, I decided to do something absurd for the turn of the next. I present to you: flaming underpants.

Background

Although the plan does seem to resemble a Mythbusters' episode (even by chemical), I thought of it recently. Besides, the construction is different. I just wanted something quick and strange to burn. ;-)

Construction

Underwear

Digging through the mess in my room, I found two pairs of underwear and a pair of socks, both obviously worn far too long, having large holes and, erm, darker colored fabric in spots. Underpants and socks are mostly cotton, so it's not too bad to burn.

Packing...

I began by stuffing what was left of the socks with crude sodium chlorate, then stacking them and wrapping with the underwear and more chlorate.

Finished

Here is the finished device. A fuse lights a pile of meal powder, which has some ground magnalium mixed in to ensure ignition. The box lid is well-caked with sodium chlorate, from having used it to dry the very material loaded inside and should burn very nicely. This will incinerate the wrapped package, igniting what's inside. All together, the box should burn quickly around the package, which should burn slower.

Let's watch!
