Virginia Railway Express GP-40 Virginian Berkshire 2-8-4
Based on the KATO E-8 model, this locomotive and three of her sisters were re-detailed to represent the 6900 class of E-8's that the Southern used to power the Crescent up until the train was turned over to AMTRAK in the mid 1980's. The main spotting features are the four air tanks on the roof. Four of these locomotives (6902, 6906, 6911, 6916) are on the roster. This is a custom painted Atlas GP-40 model using MicroScale decals. The exhaust for the steam generator was also added as a detail. It represents locomotive VO2, which ran in the 1990's on the Manassas Line of the Virginia Railway Express, a communter line serving the Washington, DC area. Lighting is provided by Richmond control modules which have a headlight and flashing ditchlights for forward operations and red markers for pusher operations. This is a KATO model that has had the GHQ Elesco Feedwater Heater detail kit applied. It is also custom painted, numbered and weathered to represent locomotive 4875. This is an Atlas model custom painted and lettered with MicroScale decals to represent a locomotive number 4631 currently operating at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point, NC. Yes, the prototype IS red... This is the companion locomotive to U.S. Army 4631 currently operating at Military Ocean Terminal Sunny Point, NC. It's number is -- you guessed it -- 4632. Custom painted and lettered with MicroScale decals. MicroScale decals were used to decorate this LifeLike 2-8-4 before it was issued commercially in factory paint. This is a stock LifeLike locomotive that has been weathered. It has been converted to DCC and successfully pulls 34 NMRA weighted 33-foot hoppers (plus a caboose).

Flatcar with Tractors (and a FRED)
These are stock pulpwood cars with loads cut from twigs of the azaleas in our front yard. This load originated at a pulp yard where the logs were loaded by hand. That is why the logs are only half-width of the car. A man could not lift a longer log. The logs on this car were also cut from azelia bush twigs. The tiedown bands are strips of press-on lines from Letraset. This is an Aztec-modified flatcar that has an operating FRED mounted on it. The tractors are Athern products. The tiedowns are simulated with thread and the wheel chocks are small pieces of basswood. The Massey-Ferguson tractors on this flatcar are Wiking models. Tiedowns are thread and wheel chocks are basswood. This was made from a Quality Craft Kit that is no longer available. It is made of basswood. The doors are white metal castings. This was a fun project. It was done for an April Fool's article in the NVNTRAK CallBoard in 1995. The article was the last in a series on TOFC equipment. The horse and wagon are from a kit sold by Neil's N Gauging Trains.

Bluebird Observation Dome
This shows the conversion of a standard KATO observation car to a dome-observation used on the Wabash Bluebird. This is the side view after a standard KATO observation car was converted to a dome-observation car as used on the Wabash Bluebird. The dome part is from a ConCor dome car. This car was kitbashed and custom painted. It is named after Ft. Rucker, Alabama, where my bride of 40 years and I were married. The body was a combine. The front end is a combination of styrene bits and pieces freelanced to look like the business end of a Doodlebug. I don't remember what the mechanism is, but it is a vintage 'grinder'. This began life as a coach. The front was modified to resemble Virginia Railway Express' cab control car V800. The decals are from MicroScale. The lighting system is by Richmond controls and includes headlights and flashing ditch lights for pusher operations and red tail lights for 'normal' running. This custom painted and decaled little LifeLike feller has been all up and down the East Coast pulling publicity trains promoting the two major NTRAK conventions sponsored by Northern Virginia NTRAK in 1996 and 2004. Since it is still an analog locomotive, it has been retired from service in favor of some others that have been built/decorated by other club members. The decals are from a custom set produced by Rail Graphics. Each charter member of Northern Virginia NTRAK had the car of his choice custom painted and decaled by the CEO. The car numbers on each one consisted of the charter member's initials and the number 1992, signifying the date that NVNTRAK was officially chartered. No more cars will be decorated in this series. The custom decal set was produced by Rail Graphics. This is one of two general purpose boxcars owned by the CEO that were custom painted and decaled by the CEO for members of Northern Virginia NTRAK who were not charter members. These were produced before the club started commissioning special runs. The custom decals were produced by Rail Graphics. This is the second of two general purpose boxcars owned by the CEO that were custom painted and decaled by the CEO for members of Northern Virginia NTRAK who were not charter members. These were produced before the club started commissioning special runs. The custom decals were produced by Rail Graphics. Dave Freshwater produced a limited edition of custom painted and decaled cars for the club members who had served as editors of the club newsletter "The CallBoard". This is the CEO's car, commemorating the years 1995-2001 when he served as the editor. This is one of two special run boxcars commemorating the 5th anniversary of Northern Virginia NTRAK. This one is blue, the other is gray. The car is an Atlas 40 footer custom decorated by Medford Trains. This is the second of two special run boxcars commemorating the 5th anniversary of Northern Virginia NTRAK. This one is gray, the other is blue. The car is an Atlas 50 footer custom decorated by Medford Trains. This car was decorated by the CEO to demonstrate how the early custom decal set produced by Rail Graphics would look on a non-boxcar piece of equipment. This is the only piece of passenger equipment known to have NVNTRAK markings. The european outline car is in it's original paint scheme, which was just too tempting for the CEO to resist applying some of the custom decals produced by Rail Graphics to it. This caboose was presented at the 1996 NTRAK East Convention in Alexandria, VA to everyone who successfully ran a train around the 400+ module Red Line Route layout. It was custom decorated by Medford Trains especially for the event. When the CEO participated in the 1998 NTRAK East Convention in Orlando, FL "Magic Rails 1998", he decorated the trailer on this FEC flatcar to commemorate the occasion. This is just one of a sequentially numbered series of special run cars commissioned by the Northern Virginia NTRAK from deLuxe Innovations. These was the club's best selling, non-convention special run. There were five different numbers in the first run, and then another run of five more. In fact, several years later, deLuxe 'uncovered' another batch that had been mistakenly printed with the "NVNTRAK" on the wrong end of the cars, and these constituted a third series in the special run. All have been sold out for years.

Containers on Alan Curtis' Chassis Closed Body Transfer Truck
This model is built up from a Showcase Miniatures tractor and two of Alan Curtis' pup trailer kits. This is a Showcase Miniatures kit. This is one of Alan Curtis' chassis kits. Show are stock 40', 45', and 53' containers mounted on chassis kits produced by Alan Curtis. This is a Showcase Miniatures tractor kit and and Alan Curtis 20' chassis kit with a stock 20' container mounted on it. This vehicle began life as a Wiking stake body cab over. The stake body was replaced by a MicroTrains 20' container. Custom decals made from cutting up a MicroScale Western Maryland decal set. This is another Wiking model cab over with the body removed and replaced with styrene. The concrete culverts are styrene tubes.
This model is built up from a Showcase Miniatures tractor and two of Alan Curtis' pup trailer kits.
