What kind of dogs are those?

Sophie

Vinnie

If you only knew how many times I've heard that question.

If you only knew how sick I am of answering it.

I keep threatening to print little cards with all the answers to the usual questions.

It would look something like this:

  • No, they're not Whippits, Chihuahuas, or deer.

  • They're Italian Greyhounds.

  • Yes, that's the toy version of the racing greyhounds.

  • Yes, they sure can run fast.

  • No they don't eat much.

  • They weigh about ten pounds.

  • Yes, they're fully grown.

I was dead set against ever getting a dog, but Donna did a lot of research and decided this breed would be OK: small house dog, short hair, doesn't shed much, doesn't slobber, doesn't bark much. (As a friend once said, "You call that a dog?") We found a breeder who had a "pet quality" female so we went to check her out and ended up bringing "Sophie" home. Everything they say about this breed is right. They are a great low-maintenance pet. I'd recommend to anyone seeking a terrific house dog.

That was 1998. In 2002 a coworker contacted me looking for a good home for a male IG puppy. That evening we added Vinnie to the family. These dogs are like Lays potato chips - you can't have just one.

Here are several good Web sites if you want to learn more about Italian Greyhounds:
