Part 8

"Alysha," Davy asked in disbelief before running over to her. He grabbed her in a hug, and she let him, not wanting to move away.

"Hey," she said back, "Did you miss me?" The answer was obvious, but she wanted to hear the words anyway.

"Of course," Davy answered, "I’m so glad you’re okay." Mandy walked up behind him.

"I promised myself I’d be mad at you," Mandy said, "but I can’t right now. It looks like you’ve been through enough. If you have to blame anyone, blame Mike."

"You have no idea," Alysha told her, "I meant to come back earlier, but I walked out too far. Eventually this guy helped me find my way here. Then I heard your music. Micky, you’re a loud person, did you know that?"

"Glad I could help," Micky replied, "Don’t make me do it again, okay?"

"All right," Alysha agreed, "I won’t make you be loud again…I don’t how long I could handle it." He scowled at her good-naturedly. Peter and Mike hadn’t spoken up.

"Peter," she said, "I know I haven’t known you for very long, but I have to say one thing. No matter what anyone else thinks, you’re a great friend. It’s nice to know that you were here. I know you didn’t give up hope."

"Mike," she continued, "I can see clearly that you held the group together through all this. Not everyone can take what I did easily. If it wasn’t for you, I bet Mandy would have decked me already." Seeing that she was all right, the guys all left, promising to come back later. Mandy turned to her quickly.

"Where were you," Mandy asked her. Alysha took a moment to think and then her face lit up in remembrance.

"There was this strange man," she said, "He pointed a gun at me and ordered me into his car." Her friends gazed at her in astonishment, "He took me to this room, where he questioned me, made me tell him everything." She grew silent.

"What else," Mandy asked.

"He gave me the formulas for going back to our own time," she answered softly, "And he gave me the one for coming back. Said you could go back if you wanted to, but I told him I’m staying here. Then he vanished and so did the room. I found myself outside and some guy saved me from getting run over. Then I heard this music, and I knew where to go."

"This first man told you how to get out," Mandy asked, "Where’s it at?" Alysha pulled the papers from her pocket and handed them to her friend.

"I hope you don’t go," Alysha told her, "but it’s your decision if you want to go back or not. There’s nothing you can do to change my mind. Besides, how would I explain it to the guys?" Mandy’s face fell at Alysha’s words.

"You just had to make it harder on me," Mandy said, "I want to go back, but what about Micky and the guys? And I can’t leave you here alone."

"I want to go back too," Sara admitted, "I don’t belong in the sixties. I belong in my own time. I like Peter and all, but this is just too unreal for me."

"Me too," Stephanie said, "It’s really fun here and all, but it only seems to find more trouble than I’m looking for. It’s destroying our friendship little by little."

"I never thought so," Alysha said, "It made me realize how strong our friendship really was. Mandy, I’m so sorry for what I did. I didn’t run out because of you. When I saw that I was about to hit one of my best friends, I turned and walked away. We’ve survived through all this. If this had happened in our real time, we would have stopped being friends days ago."

"True," Mandy said, "but I can’t continue staying here, no matter how much I like the guys. Sorry Alysha, I just can’t do it."

"I understand," Alysha responded, "but before you go, can we do one last concert?" The girls immediately agreed and Alysha raced upstairs to her room. She came back seconds later.

"I was working on this song when we first arrived," she explained when she came back, "I want it to be our last song as a group." She placed it on the music stand and took her guitar and started singing. Her friends soon joined her.

How did I not see this coming

It was an old dream of mine

So many years lay between us

And there never seemed to be enough time

You broke my heart when I saw you

I knew it was a joke at the time

But now that I’ve finally seen you

Something tells me it’ll be fine

Hours turned into days

And days into years

And yet I haven’t forgotten you

Amidst of all the tears

So please don’t leave me

I know where I belong

How many days must it take

Or do I just have to be strong

I wanted to believe you

When you looked me in the eyes

But you finally saw the love

And now I don’t have to try

I don’t know how long I’ve dreamed this

It seems too good to be true

But there’s no doubt in my heart

That it’s really you

Now that life is changing

And you’re fading away

I still cling to the hope

That you’ll choose to stay

So come back to me soon

And know that I will be here

No matter what the consequences

And after all the years

And if you choose to go

I will understand

Maybe we’ll soon have a chance

To someday meet again

"That was great," Stephanie exclaimed, " Maybe I’ll come visit every once in a while."

"I know I will," Mandy said, "We need to get together and jam sometime. Who knows, maybe you’ll open for the Monkees sometime while you’re here."

"So will I," Sara said, "I promised Peter we’d work on that recipe. You wouldn’t be able to handle them alone."

"What will I tell them through," Alysha asked.

"Tell them we left to find ourselves," Mandy said, "I think they’ll take that answer." Alysha looked at her, "Tell them we got a gig lined up in a nearby town. Apparently someone heard us at the contest and wanted us to perform."

"Then why am I still here," Alysha asked.

"Just tell them that we needed to get away for a while," Sara said, "We needed to find out what was headed our way. You’re still here because when we come back, you wanted the place to be ready."

"I think that’ll work," Alysha replied, "Man, am I going to miss you guys."

"Why don’t you come back," Mandy asked, "We’re old enough to get our own place."

"I couldn’t do that," she said, "I finally found somewhere I belong. I can get a good job at Vincent’s easy enough. This place has to be in top-shape when you come back." Her friends smiled at her, silently glad that someone would be waiting when they got back.

"Before we go," Mandy said, "I want to give you something." She raced upstairs and soon came back, "We got the tape they used for recording the contest. It’s of you and the Monkees. Think of us when you play it."

"Here’s a copy of us playing," Alysha said, "I came across a recorder in my room and recorded us playing our songs, at least the little we practiced. Never forget the Flaming Lizards."

"How could I," Sara asked, "Who ever heard of a band called the Flaming Lizards before?" The others laughed.

"I want you guys to have my Monkees collection," Alysha said, "If my room still exists out there. I know I left a few of them at Mandy’s house. Remember the good times. Don’t forget to visit."

The girls all looked at each other. Mandy picked up both of the papers, "Let’s do this girls," she said. They gathered around the paper.

I wanna be free,
Like the bluebirds flying by me,
Like the waves out on the blue sea,
If your love has to tie me,
Don't try me, say good-bye.
I wanna be free,
Don't say you love me say you like me,
But, when I need you beside me,
Stay close enough to guide me,
Confide in me, whoa-oh-oh.
I wanna hold your hand,
Walk along the sand,
Laughing in the sun,
Always having fun.
Doing all those things
Without any strings to tie me down.
I wanna be free,
Like the warm September wind, babe,
Say you'll always be my friend, babe,
We can make it to the end, babe,
Again, babe, I've gotta say...
I wanna be free,
I wanna be free,
I wanna be free.

Once the song was over, Alysha watched as her friends slowly vanished from sight. As they did so, she noticed something on the ground and waited for a minute before picking it up. It was a small picture of the four of them at the party.

Sara was sitting on the floor, ducking from pieces of popcorn being thrown across the room. Stephanie was just walking in the door from getting more, looking at them in shock. Mandy and Alysha were sitting across the room, doing the actual throwing. All four of them had huge smiles on their faces. Alysha flipped the picture over and saw the words ‘Best Friends Forever’ written in Mandy’s handwriting.
