Birth Information

The estate papers of James Germany (housed in Amite County, MS) establish Elizabeth R. as one of the heirs. A land deed identifying Hannah Elizabeth as the wife of James suggests she was Elizabeth's mother; this is further supported by probate records of Willis C. Fisher, Elizabeth's first husband, in which Hannah E. Germany makes a claim against the estate for services in taking care of a slave child. Elizabeth's father signed the marriage bond. The 1850 census record indicates Elizabeth was born in 1817 in Amite County, MS, which is consistent with the age bracket given in the 1830 census when she lived with Willis Fisher.

Residence

The family was still in the Wilkinson/Amite area of Mississippi, as evidenced by census records of 1810 and a Power of Attorney that James Germany signed in 1815 in Amite County, Mississippi. Elizabeths's mother and father (James and Hannah Elizabeth) sold land in Amite County to Henry Hanna in 1819 (originally purchased in 1818 from Joseph Thomas). This is probably when they left the area because James Germany appears as the head of household in Feliciana Parish, LA, just south of Amite & Wilkinson counties, in the 1820 census. Marriage records from that area show several people with the surname GERMANY: Elizabeth R., Benjamin, Henry H., Jacob C., Washington, and William, all of whom married between 1824 and 1837, so it looks like the family stayed in the Feliciana area. Washington and his new wife appear as a couple in the 1830 census in West Feliciana Parish, LA. She appears with their children one parish over, in East Feliciana, in 1840.

Spouse/Children

Elizabeth's first marriage was to Willis C. Fisher in 1830 (marriage bond). The marriage was a short one, for Willis died around 1832. Elizabeth's mother filed a claim against the estate of Willis C. Fisher in September 1832. See the FISHER estate files.

Elizabeth married Nathan Land, a man much older than she, around 1840-1841. They had one son, John Land, who was born in Amite County in 1841. Nathan and Elizabeth Land signed papers in her father's estate file, housed in Amite County, MS. Elizabeth and her brother Robert Germany were administrators for Nathan Land's estate in 1845. Elizabeth married Thomas R. Craft on 18 April 1852 in Amite County, MS.
