Bernie is a fawn/white male English bulldog (or just bulldog), born in June 2000. His breeder was Toni Jones of
Boyz Bulldogs. Bernie comes from
champion bloodlines and was originally held as a potential showdog. However, he had an elongated
soft palette, which was corrected
with surgery. Toni's policy is not to breed dogs that required surgery to fix medical problems
(a good policy in my opinion!), so Bernie became a pet-quality dog, sold with a neuter contract.
He was six months old when we got him. We were expecting this little puppy. We sure were surprised
when this 45 pound stubby ball ran to greet us at the door! We fell in love with him right then.
He just happily followed us to the car, never looking back.
The first night with Bernie was pretty rough. We thought we would keep him shut in the kitchen since
we weren't sure about his housetraining. He kicked up a racket! I've never heard such strange sounds
from a dog! We caved and brought him to our bedroom. (He still sleeps curled up in a blanket on the
floor of our bedroom.) He spent most of the night panting; now I realize he was just nervous that first night.
He went through an entire chorus of different breathing sounds. I got up each time he changed sounds,
fearing that something was wrong with his breathing, a trait bulldogs are famous for. Now I can recognize
the variation in his normal breathing, but at the time I wasn't sure. Bernie's
snores, snorts, and sighs now lull me to sleep. We keep a fan going to help drown him out, but I still hear him
rising above the fan several times a night....
