Vietnam
Why did the Vietnam War Occur?
That is a good question with a complicated answer. Jeff Drake
has put together a wonderful site with a detailed explanation
at http://www.vietvet.org/jeffviet.htm.
The following is a brief summary of what he says on his site.
Prior
to W.W.II, Vietnam was a French Colony. This didn't sit well
with the local population so during W.W.II they fought the French
and the Japanese to free them selves. They won and after W.W.II
they were split into a North and South along the 17th parallel.
The North aligned with the USSR and China, The South with the
United States. Come 1956 an election was to be held to determine
the fate of the two countries.
Come 1960, with the South committing horrible human rights
atrocities a civil war broke out between the North and the South.
The United States soon became involved.(49)
