 next session I'm hosting: September 19, 2017

Hi, everybody!  This is where I keep chord-and-lyrics charts for songs for my every other 3rd Tuesday edition of the Tuesday evening facilitated/beginner jams, sponsored by the Southern Wisconsin Bluegrass Music Association.

The next session I'm hosting will be Tuesday, September 19, 2017 .

I hope that you can make it,  and that you'll bring  your  suggestions for songs you'd like to play and sing with the group.  (If you're looking for ideas, feel free to use the Bluegrass Fakebook, or consider some of the songs from past Third Tuesday sessions  or  the excellent BluegrassLyrics.com site) .

Could you explain the way these charts are set up?

Sure!  I set these charts up to show what chord is played in every "bar," or measure, of the song.

All of these songs are in either 4/4 time, or in 3/4 (waltz) time.   The chart says what the "time signature" of the song is at the top, below the title.

A bar of a song in 4/4 time, is made up of 4 beats :  "one...two...three...four..." (etc.)    I show a bar of music in a song in 4/4 time, this way:

          G    /     |     /

A bar in a song in 3/4 time is made up of  3 beats  :  "one...two...three..."     (etc.)   I show a bar of music in a song in 3/4 time, this way:

          G    /      /

The first beat of every bar is marked by a letter showing the chord that needs to be played in that bar.  (Here, it's a bar of G Chord).

To show a verse of a song, these symbols for a bar are strung together in lines, and then the lines are strung together into verses:

         G    /     |     /       G    /     |     /       C    /     |     /       C   /     |      /           (four  bars strung together make a line . . .)

         G    /     |     /       G    /     |     /       D    /     |     /       D    /     |      /

         G    /     |     /       G    /     |     /       C    /     |     /       C    /     |      /

         G    /     |     /       D    /     |     /       C    /     |     /       C    /     |      /        (. . . four lines strung together make up a verse)

What's with the slash marks?  The slash marks in the 4/4 time song show the  two" and "four" beats of the bar -- these are known as the "backbeats."  These beats are usually given a little more emphasis  ("one-TWO-three-FOUR"), especially by instruments like the mandolin and the guitar.  The slash marks in a 3/4 time song just reflect the "two" and "three" beats of the bar.  They are not called "backbeats" but they do tend to be given a little special emphasis  ("one-TWO-THREE  one-TWO-THREE").
