Despite what you may have read, AVANTASIA- THE METAL OPERA is an incredible masterwork. Even more incredible, it is the work of one man: Edguy's vocalist/keyboardist/mastermind Tobias Sammet. You can bet that this accomplishment was his labor of love, took some serious time to put together and is something not to be dismissed on a mere whim. Sammet takes on writing, producing, vocals and keyboard duties on this album! He assembled one of the best bands to back him: Henjo Richter (Gamma Ray) on guitar, Markus Grosskopf (Helloween) on bass, Alex Holzwarth (Rhapsody) on drums Jens Ludwig (EDGUY) on guitar--and then acquired the vocal talents of today's top Metal vocalists, including: Michael Kiske (Ex-HELLOWEEN), David DeFeis (VIRGIN STEELE), Rob Rock (IMPELLITTERI), Andre Matos (ANGRA), Kai Hansen (GAMMA RAY) and Timo Tolkki (STRATOVARIUS) to sing the parts of the various characters in the story... if that's not too much to swallow, then get this: every song is a masterpiece. No joke. This is straight up screaming Power Metal with a twist: a great story. And there's no boring interludes here. It just rocks. If you like to hear great singers, this album is your holy grail. Definitely the best "Metal Opera" every produced, much more listenable than Virgin Steele's protracted epic THE HOUSE OF ATREUS (which is still a good album) The good thing is Sammet didn't stray too far from the traditional Edguy/Helloween melodic Metal sound. I can honestly say that after one listen, I knew this album was the shit. After numerous enjoyable ones, I say that this album ranks up there as one of the top 10 Metal albums of all time. I eagerly await part 2 of the story.
