I bought this album because Mike Vescera sings on it. The majority of bands that he has sung for (Obsession, Yngwie Malmsteen, Killing Machine, Loudness, Reign of Terror, etc.) have mostly gone for the jugular both musically and lyrically. There is the occasional ballad, but mostly Mike has sung on heavy albums. While he is still kicking ass, he is doing some things differently on this new Dr. Sin album, SHADOWS OF LIGHT. It seems that he's trying for grooves and emotion here. Don't get me wrong, it's still Power Metal, but slightly more melodic, with an emphasis on harmonies and groove. It's an interesting change for him. I'm pretty sure it's the first time he's done this type of thing. It's not the heaviest or best band Mike has been in, and certainly not as good as last year's awesome KILLING MACHINE, but it is cool. After listening to the album three times, I find myself liking it more and more. I like albums that don't really hit you at first, but grow on you over time like this one. Highlights include "Time After Time," "Same Old Story (Get A Grip)," "Gates of Madness" and "Danger." Dr. Sin is a Brazilian band, but you'd never know it by the way they sound. No folk elements are evident, but there are some power grooves, straight ahead power tunes and some progressive elements on this album. This is the band's sixth album, but this is the first one I've ever heard by them. It may be the band's best work, it may be their worst I don't know. All in all, Dr. Sin is not groundbreaking Metal, but it is cool and a must-have for Mike Vescera fans like myself.
