I anticipate anything by the Edguys and this is no exception. MANDRAKE is the band's first new material in over two and a half years. Last year's re-recording of their first album THE SAVAGE POETRY was good, but lacked the fire of their last two albums, 1998's VAIN GLORY OPERA and the 1999 masterpiece THEATER OF SALVATION. After several listens, I can say that MANDRAKE is very good, up there with the band's best material. I don't know how Tobias Sammet does it, he works his butt off and consistently produces great Metal! What Edguy does differently on this album is come up with some great vocal hooks. One listen to tracks like "Jerulalem", "All The Clowns" and the first single "Painting On The Wall" and you're pulled in and pummelled with melody. On several tracks, Edguy wear their Helloween influences on their sleeves ("Golden Dawn" and "Save Us Now"). If you're a fan of well-produced, fast-paced Power Metal with a great vocalist, then MANDRAKE is highly recommended!
