JAG PANZER – MECHANIZED WARFARE
2001 Century Media
After bravely tackling the story of Shakespeare's Macbeth in their concept album THANE TO THE THRONE, Jag Panzer returns with what I feel is one of the strongest releases of the year, the mighty and powerful MECHANIZED WARFARE. I simply cannot stop listening to it over and over, from beginning to end. Harry "The Tyrant" Conklin really shines here with great "pleading" vocal hooks on tracks like "Frozen In Fear" and "The Silent." He is what makes the album work so well. While THANE TO THE THRONE was good, it was still a bit much to swallow, considering the subject matter. Now, the band returns to a solid set of ten songs drawing inspiration from war, fear, death and literature, etc. Yet another American band with so much to offer, Jag Panzer is mostly forced to go to Europe for accolades. That is really sad, because they have now put out four solid albums in a row since reforming in 1997. These are all great releases that will appeal to fans of Steel Prophet and Iced Earth. They bury the band's earlier work and show what a tight Metal band can do when they focus and get label support. I hope Jag Panzer can reach the next level, but I hope that they do not sacrifice their craft to get there. With such a great Metal history, I am sure they will not.
