| Back in the '80s, Leatherwolf was hailed as the 'next big thing' in the Metal world. Their first self-titled album (1984) didn't do much for their career. Thankfully, the band pushed onward and released another self-titled album in 1987 on Island Records, a label not really known for their Metal roster (except maybe for Anthrax.) I remember buying and liking the album in 1987, and I still like it a lot. LEATHERWOLF (1987) had several classic songs like "Cry Out," "The Calling," "Rule The Night" and a great cover of CCR's "Bad Moon Rising." This was a solid album which got the band some attention.
By the time 1989 rolled around, Leatherwolf had taken things to the next level with the undeniably awesome Power Metal masterpiece STREET READY. This is as solid a Metal album as you will ever find... 10 great melodic songs, and one awesome instrumental. The amazing "Wicked Ways" starts things off, then the classics "Street Ready," "Hideaway," "Take A Chance," the instrumental "Black Knight" and "Thunder" follow. The album is completed by the equally impressive songs "The Way I Feel," "Too Much," "Lonely Road" and "Spirits In The Wind." Make no mistake about it, Leatherwolf were out to make a statement with this album, and they did it. These guys were totally going for the throat with this album. There are loads of great choruses and guitars here to enjoy. The album was produced by Kevin Beamish, who seemed to work with every band at one time or another. One of the coolest things about Leatherwolf was their name... I mean, it's just bad to the bone! Also, they were one of the first bands (if not THE first) to feature three lead guitarists. They called it the "Triple Axe Attack." Michael Olivieri, Carey Howe, and Geoff Gayer comprised the Triple Axe Attack, with Olivieri also performing duties as the lead singer. And what a singer he is still one of my favorites of all time. Drummer Dean Roberts and bassist Paul Carmen filled out the classic line-up. The band released a live album called WIDE OPEN back in 1999 that featured tracks from all three of their studio albums. This marked the end of releases for the band, but rest assured they will not soon be forgotten! Do yourself a favor and seek out their CDs, especially STREET READY. DISCOGRAPHY:
