| SLAYER! Need I say more? On Friday, November 2, Sonya and I witnessed the kings of thrash speed metal. The heaviest of the heavy. If it was not for this band, you would never have had Pantera or the entire thrash/blackmetal scene (except Venom). The first band on was some wanna be Pantera called Chaimira or something like that. Then American Head Charge took the stage. First it took them 30 minutes to set up, and then in the first song the drummer's foot pedal fell apart. They have 2 keyboard beaters. I say beaters because all they do is beat the keyboard on their chest. After their 2nd song, the crowd began throwing things at them chanting "Slay-er, Slay-er, you suck, Slay-er, Slay-er!"
Finally the mighty King, Hannamen, Araya, and Bostaph took the stage. An awesome backdrop of a cathedral with stacks of Marshall cabnets and a towering drum kit set the stage. The intro "Darkness of Christ" lets you know it's coming, then GOD HATES US ALL!! "Disciple" roars out like a gladiator in combat who never stops until the entire army is dead. This was an awesome show. Slayer were in top form. Tom Araya was even talkative. He was joking about the crowd moshing saying, "I see you guys practicing your karate kicks," making motions with his hands. Awesome. He told the crowd to watch out for each other, "and if you see some fucker trying to blow up your neighborhood, kill the fucker, man." And then they went into "Mandatory Suicide" followed by "Chemical Warfare." Most amazing Slayer show I have seen ever. I have seen them 7 times in 3 countries, and this was the best. Set List not in order:
After the show I was lucky enough to meet one of the coolest guys in the world, Kerry King. I showed him a picture of a model I made of the Slayer stage show using plastic army men and he loved it. He was so cool. I asked him if he would mind signing my vinyl records and he said, "How long will it take you to get them?" "5 seconds," I replied. He signed every one. Dr. Evil is the man!! THANKS, KERRY! Brett Goode |
