| Because of a change of venue from Jaxx in Virginia, Manowar decided to play their first show on their new US tour Saturday night at Ziggy's in Winston-Salem, NC. Lucky us! We made the road trip and were witnesses to the almighty Kings of Metal at this very intimate club (a hole in the wall). But that's what made it so special...we were actually an arm's length away from the band! Check out the photos yes, we were that close!!!
The evening started with two opening bands, the first being a really cool 5-piece thrash Metal band called HavocHate. On a stage barely big enough to stand on, these guys put on a great show of mainly old-school inspired Metal. They reminded me of Metal Church meets Meliah Rage. They had the right attitude and kicked ass. I got a copy of their demo CD, and I was impressed! A real up-and-coming band. Next up was a 5-piece Death/Black Metal band you may have heard of called Usurper. Didn't understand a word the singer sang, and he was right in front of me the whole time. With beer in hand, he screamed his way through at least 6 or 7 songs. Not really my cup of tea, but they had the passion and energy. Finally, the Kings of Metal, MANOWAR roared onto the stage to their namesake song, "Manowar." Scott Columbus, Eric Adams, Joey DeMaio and Karl Logan came out and kicked our ass. They went right for the jugular and killed!!!! The club filled in tightly and the guys played classic after classic. After the first few songs, Eric said they didn't know what they would play. But they seemed to stick to their setlist. And look at the list we couldn't complain really. Of course, some fans wanted to hear some songs that the band didn't play. The most notable exclusion being "Courage," which was asked for but not delivered. Manowar performed the title track from their forthcoming new album, "Warriors of the World." Awesome tune, I can't wait for the album! Eric pumped the crowd into singing along with every song, but most of us didn't need exerting. The show was over too soon and seemed short, but if you look at the setlist, it's pretty long and they really delivered! Setlist (not in exact order):
