RHAPSODY – RAIN OF A THOUSAND FLAMES
2001 LMP/SPV Records
Well, I've listened to this album about five times now, and I can still recommend it despite the cheesy parts. RAIN OF A THOUSAND FLAMES is Rhapsody's sixth release since 1997. The band put together this seven-song mini album to fill the void until their next full-length album. It's still almost 42 minutes long and worth the money. Rhapsody have been one of my favorite bands since the first time I heard them, and they never fail to go over the top— music-wise and packaging-wise. RAIN OF A THOUSAND FLAMES comes in a digipak with awesome artwork and a pop-up inside of the creatures on the album cover! The creatures look like something out of the new Lord of the Rings movie. The layout is typical Rhapsody, nobody has packaging like they do–great full-color design, photos, lyrics and notes. Musically, I think the band has grown again and branches out into some different directions. You've got the punishing songs, like the title track, featuring some of the fastest drums and soaring vocals around. Then you get the epic songs like "Queen of Dark Horizons" and "The Wizard's Last Rhymes," both over 10 minutes each. They even did another video, this time for the title song which you can play on your computer. Really cool, and that's one of the reasons I like this band, they go the extra mile. However, sometimes the band can be cheesy...very cheesy. For instance, the video is pretty cheesy, but when you've got a naked chick with pierced nipples in it, hey– I'm there! Also, I can do without the narration in the songs. They only do it a few times, but that totally cheeses up the song "Tears of a Dying Angel." Sure, it adds to the drama a little, but that guy has to go! If you're going to have a guy narrating, at least get a guy with a cool voice! But that's my only complaint, because Rhapsody have done it again. The album kicks ass.
